I don't think it's awful. He could be bluffing his missed draw. If he is a thinking player he could see a board here that obviously has not helped a player who raised UTG and curled up vs. the checkraise.

What about raising the turn for a free showdown?

I agree with you although the main str8 draw got there on the river. Btw wouldn't a good flush draw check-raise the turn instead?

why do you think that is better than calling down? because I can make him fold something that beats me? that would work... obviously folding a 3-bet or a river donk

Yeah the turn 3-bet helps sniff out a bluffer and let's you see a showdown for free. Basically you are getting more value for your BB than if you spent it calling the river. More information, etc...

I don't think I would worry about the straight draw in this hand...unless he is a total mouthbreather, he isn't calling the UTG raise pf from the sb with 87...

my standard opponents would do that. if sooted, for sure.
