I Was Gambling in Havana....

I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns, and money
Dad, get me out of this

Warren Zevon
1947-2003

Rest in Peace

Werewolves of London

I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook's
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein
Werewolves of London
If you hear him howling around your kitchen door
Better not let him in
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
Werewolves of London again
Werewolves of London
He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim
I'd like to meet his tailor
Werewolves of London
Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect
Werewolves of London
Draw blood

Warren Zevon

Peace,

Wow!

Very good. I thought that I might be the only one old enough to remember that song. I was in college back then

Now I just can't remember the name of the album...

Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best
Excitable boy, they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
Excitable boy, they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy

RIP

I always loved the line, "I'd like to meet his tailor"

Warren Zevon played a free concert at my college and only a handfull of people showed up. He deserved a lot more recognition than he got.

Even though this was expected, it is sad news.

Accidentally Like A Martyr

We made mad love
Shadow love
Random love
And abandoned love
Accidentally like a martyr
The hurt gets worse and the heart gets harder

Chris Berman on ESPN remembers. Of all his goofy nicknames for players, my favorite was (Yankee utility infielder) Luis Sojo "in the rain"

I remember when I was first getting into 'classic' rock and I was discovering my dad's vinyl collection. Zevon's "Excitable Boy" absolutely blew me away, alas, I never followed up on his music.

I've heard that his most recent album is every bit as good. Can somebody give me some guidance on filling in the blanks and refer me to some of his other discs?

Re: Werewolves of London

Zevon made a really great cameo on the Larry Sanders show. He was bitching to Artie, the producer, about how Larry never let him play any new stuff, he always made him play Werewolves of London, and he was SICK of playing Werewolves of London. So Artie assures him he can play anything he wants. So he does. Then of course Larry says, "Hey, Warren how 'bout that song Werewolves of London? I love that song? How 'bout you guys (to the audience), do you want to hear Werewolves of London?" Everybody cheers, so of course Warren plays it, but he gives a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that was just priceless. I laughed and laughed....

He was one of a kind. Well, him and Randy Newman, but Warren was darker.
