Dumbest home game rule ever?
 

Okay, so we all know some uninformed people play by some pretty dumb rules, but have you ever heard one this bad? My buddy played at his neighbor's house this weekend, and there were a lot of asinine rules he told me, but this was the worst: when it gets to heads-up, they play 6 hands, and the person with the most chips after 6 hands wins. So basically if you have a big enough stack, you can just fold 6 times and win.

I like the rule at a home game I used to play at:

"1/2 100NL - before the flop the max raise is to $4 TOTAL, on the flop and beyond there's no limit"

so yeah 10 people see the flop for $4....flop K42 rainbow - someone's always got 2 pair already

The first home game I played in:
Game ends at 10:30, person with the most chips win! Every night at 10:00pm....short stacks going all-in, big stacks folding...until someone calls, gives all his chips to medium stack and they win!!!! CRAZY!

I played in one with an ante instead of blinds, it was limit before the flop, pot limit after the flop. There was never anything you should fold pre-flop. I didn't like it much.

We played with 2 jokers in the deck. The jokers could be anything. also if there was a bad beat hand was declared dead - everything was set to initial position.

I played a Home Game with no side pots. If you were all-in for your last 100 when the blinds were 1,000-2,000 you could win the full pot of 3,100. You could also win any additional betting the other players made.

Needless to say I only played once.

6 Hands Heads up.
Ability to win full pot if you have 1 small denom chip left.

That is...tough...
I feel like an idiot for griping about some of the home game rules I've ran into...

I played at a friends house who had a no check-raising rule. I know.. I know...many people have this rule as they feel C/R'ing is of poor taste. Meh, whatever. I told him that his game was not my cup of tea since the C/R is a valuable tool. A few weeks later, he came to me and said that some others didn't like it as well, so they changed it.

Me : "cool, you allow C/R'ing now.. count me in."
Him : "Well, we allow it in certain situations"

Him : "you can C/R as long as you don't have a flush or better"
Me : [img]/images/graemlins/crazy.gif[/img] "Um... yeah... never mind, I think I have to wash my hair or something"

At one home game, we played normal until heads-up.
Then we would shoot darts...whoever got to 201 first
won the tourney. Air hockey was used to break ties.

I was at a game and one of the guys running it was still in the game. There where 12 players left on 2 tables and the final table was going to be 10 players. 1 of the players on his table busted out and he said that the final 5 on his can stop playing and wait for one of the players on the other table to bust out. His reasoning was the blinds come to fast at 5 players.

I've played a NL home cash game where, if you have chips in front of you, you have to declare that you're leaving a half-hour in advance.

It's not as dumb as no side pots, but it's still pretty dumb.

I heard of some people that play if theres a four card straight or flush on the board - that you're not allowed to use only one hole card to complete the hand. Its like mixing Omaha in a four card straight/flush situation with Hold 'em....

Also... I've seen heads up chip leaders offer their opponent the victory if they strip. (when chip leader is a guy and opponent is female.)

This isn't even dumb if you play with a bunch of asses who win one big pot and then leave. I don't see where this is a bad thing at all.

BUT they had a rule that at any time you could go all in blind, so what you say? You couldn't make the call if you've looked at your cards [img]/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] so you literally had to call an all in blind, if you had already looked your hand got folded. I was like WTF...this is gay and left because somebody went all in blind everyhand...oh and they claim they saw this on WPT all the time [img]/images/graemlins/crazy.gif[/img]

When I visit my sister, we will occasionally play a small NLHE game (usually buy-in will be like $2 or $3) and we play with 0.05/0.10 blinds. My sister is a OK player but is kind of cautious and is the only weak-tight player of her group; for some comparisons, her husband hates poker and tries to lose his chips as quickly as possible so he can go play his guitar instead of cards, one of her friends still can't keep the hand rankings straight and is the ultimate calling station, and another guy is totally predictable in that big bet=bluff and small bet=monster.
My sister hates it when others go all-in, so she made a rule where the first play to bet on any given round can only bet $0.10. Anyone else who wants to raise on that street can raise up to all-in if they want. [img]/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

I've explained to her how this sucks and I've tried to convince her to either play real NL, or play limit or PL if she doesn't like NL. She tells me "It's a house rule and you are in my house."

No, and in fact, this is a pretty standard rule at a lot of home games, I think, including ones I play in. It's a good defense against the hit and run, and a simple courtesy to everyone else at the game. At a casino or online you can get away with this, but a friendly home game there's just no need.

I once played in a home-game where if you wanted to check-raise, you had to declare "check-raise" instead of just checking; otherwise it would be considered a string bet.

I played in a limit game where you had to "bet the raise". Every hand starts out as a $0.25-$2 bet. If you raise, that raises the lower limit of the spread, until you got above $2, at which point it's fixed limit.

As an example. I raise preflop to $1 and get 4 callers. I bet $1 on the flop and there's a raise to $3. Now my options are to call $3 or raise to $6. If I raise and get called, I can only check or bet $6 on the next round.

Here's the kicker: you could not check-raise or sandbag (call then raise on the same round).

I totally agree. At my games, I have a "can not cash out until you played at least 4 hours" rule to prevent the hit and run. Even then, my players state they will leave at a certain time.

This is pretty much common at all of the home games I go to. Its not overly enforced, but no one leaves without anouncing it at least one round of hands in advance. Even then you might be given a hard time if you hadn't mentioned you were planning to leave early in advance.

Its not like players are coming in, so whenever a player leaves early it hurts the game.

This doesn't rival some of the retarded rules earlier in the thread but I'll relate it anyway.

We're about midway into my buddy's home tournament. It's my first time playing there but he's hosted several before that. I'm in late position and pick up QQ. Naturally there are about 4-5 people to the flop. Flop is all rags and the SB on a short stack goes all in. Someone else calls so I raise all-in over the top to try and isolate (I think there was someone still to act behind me).

Host is at the table and tells me I can't do that. I look at him and tell him "I sure as hell can, why not?". He says "Well, when there's an all-in, we kind of like to turn the hands over and deal out the cards and see who wins." I tell him I don't want to go up against 3-4 opponents, just heads-up with the short stack but whatever...any other rules I should be aware of? So I end up just calling and fortunately my hand holds up. I'm not sure how we would have worked it out if one of the other hands won.

Fundraiser tourney for the local basketball team: 14 players on two tables.

Blinds are posted on the table: we start with 3250 in chips, 50/100 blinds (32.5 BB). Levels of 15 minutes big blinds of 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1500, 2000, 3000.

After hand number 1, dealer at the other table (who invented the structure) shouts "Bust Out, Blinds up." Blinds go to 100/200 on hand 2.

When questioned about the logic in this decision: "We thought there were going to be 30 people here tonight, and we didn't want this to go until 3 in the morning."

So with about 75% of the field remaining, the big blind was going to be 3000. Almost the starting stack.

Cards speak, unless you miscall your own hand. Penalty is dead hand. Subsequent miscalls result in time away from the table.
