Live tournaments suck

I played in a $80+20 at the Taj today. They filled it up with 250 entries. There were 11 at the table the whole time I was there.

The first bust out at my table was in level 1: top set versus second set in a raised pot with no straights or flushes on the board.

I was the second bust out at the table. With blinds 150/300/50 (original stacks 5000), I pushed with 3200 in 3rd position with AJo. SB called and said it always happens, he is against AA or KK, so I knew I was in trouble. I lost to queens full. The next hand, I pushed for 675 with 44 and lost to AKo.

I literally didn't win a hand in the tournament. Other than a few limped pots in the blinds, all I played was a limp with A9s, where I completely missed the flop in a 4-way pot that someone miniraised; and I was the 3rd caller of an UTG miniraise with 44 and 3 broadway cards flopped. I didn't get hands, and I wasn't playing junk.

In an online tournament, you would have tons of loose fish busting themselves out. Granted I was a little card dead and had a tight table. However, I don't understand why people think the players in a $100 live tournament are at teh level of a $10 online tournament.

Variance?

I enjoy online tournaments more most of the time ... but thats just because I find live to be hella boring.

Re: Live tournaments suck

Never entered a casino tourney. The charity events i get to play at in Ohio are as donkey filled as a 2 dollar on stars. I am usually able to push AA and KK pre flop and get 1 or even two callers with very mediocre hands where online no one would EVER call this puch with those hands.

Just a question? Did you observe your opponents showdowns or just a lot of folds to continution bets? Sometimes the biggest pair you can have live is the one between your legs ;0

Also, did you at least get the opportunity to start to try to get "reads" on opponents? Just asking as that seemed to be one of your goals going in.

I played a few in Vegas this summer. The structure was terrible on all, except the one I played at the horseshoe. I didn't really enjoy it (I enjoyed the cash games alot more and I hate cash games online).

The thing I hated the most is having to deal with bad beats live. I pushed 10-10 from the button after two limpers and the SB(!) called me for 75%(!) of his stack with K9s(!!). a 9 hit the flop and another one on the turn. I wanted to smash my beer bottle on his head. I have alot more sympathy to Hellmuth now

$80+$20? That sucks.

Re: Live tournaments suck

I played an online tourney today... $10 NLHE MTT on Full Tilt. The winner was a guy who went all-in every time he had two suited cards. He did this from the very start. These are the people I constantly see winning online tournaments. That's why I rarely play them anymore.

In the few live tournaments I've played, I usually get busted by someone making the same types of plays. But, for me, in any tournament I play, I often make the mistake of getting all my chips in with the best hand. Nonetheless, the donkey who busts my AA with his 92 (who will usually reraise me all-in preflop.) will usually run into a real player and bust out in live games. So I enjoy live tournaments more because I usually see the best players win them.

This is very true; whenever I have a bad beat put on me, I jump out of my seat, give a quick scream (or some other short burst of emotion, usually pretty weird looking), and I'm ok. In a live tourney, it is STINKING hard to maintain your composure sometimes. I'm now trying to be like Raymer and say "Well, you TRIED to give me all your chips."

I don't get upset by bad beats from fish. I just don't like it when there are no fish to give bad beats.

My experience in live poker tournaments in new york card clubs, is that the level of play is atrocious- it was very hard to find real poker players.

From your brief write up, seems like you played fishy... not surprising that you didn't last long.

This has been discussed here before, but this is very bad. If you make it 1000 and fold to a push, you are folding getting 2.4-1 pot odds. AJo is a 2.5-1 dog against QQ.

The 10xBB rule has been discussed here before. Also, my stack was only 3x antes and blinds, so I had to push.

i played at the taj last night too, the 175+25

the dealers there are horrible (so many times they didn't even know who the winner was and mucked the winners hand), but i think you just got a bad table.

at my table people were putting all their money in drawing dead or super aggressive with ace rag.

the only thing that sucks is the juice, i heard sands was having a tourney at the same time 20+10 ha

Seems that you like to overbet preflop alot. You have posted similar hands recently. (AQ push all in preflop)....Why not use the postflop game to your advange as well?

I do tend to play aggressively preflop. However, in this case pushing is the only play and any strong player would agree with that. HOH2 has an example from his own play of pushing UTG for 12xBB with KQo with big ante.

When the blinds are this big compared to your stack they are usually big for everyone else to. Blinds 150/300. I am steal raising alot at this point with both good hands (AJ+, 66+) and very bad hands (4J, 62 - easy to get away from) with smaller raises I can get away from. Thats why I am not pushing AJo here. I like 1000 with AJ or J6s.

Hey did we play a friday special qualifier together last night?

With this size stack, I am limping or pushing. I don't think getting away from a hand is a good idea after committing 1/3 of your stack. Also, I am not steal raising with J6s from 3rd position at an 11 man table.

I push a lot. However, some people like to put in a lot of small raises. With certain stack sizes, this is a matter of style. I am better with strategy than reads.

With a big ante and 14xBB, you can push with hands like AJ and 44, and standard raise with AK, JJ-AA, as well as suited connectors and junk. Therefore, people can't just come over top of your stndard raises knowing you are stealing.

Probably played you in the Friday special single table satellite. Multitabled 4 of those and got a seat. finished 118th with 120 places paying. Had 5800, blinds 300/600, SB open raised to 1800, I pushed with A8s in BB and got called by JJ.

Re: Live tournaments suck

I LOVE playing live, sooooo many different dynamics and so much more exploitable

FL finally decided to pull their collective heads out of their arses so we have our card room tournies back! So it was a 1pm start with 150 runners, $32+13 (yeah, yeah....I know!) Final 18 paid but here's the kick, the structure changed.

Used to be T700 starting at 10/15, 20 minute levels. Now it's T1500 starting at 25/50, same 20 minutes. Damn near crap shoot before the shut down, now a SOLID crap shoot after the re-start.

1st hand, I'm in the SB, 2 limpers then a raise to 150 and I finally peek at my cards, 2 black Kings, JOY! I pop it to T600 and the 2nd limper as well as the raiser, cold-call. Flop is A44, rainbow. 1st limper checks, raiser poooshes and I go into the tank. I finally muck, limper calls and tables A8s to 55....NICE!

Nothing playable during the rest of the orbit and into 50/100. Blinds are getting ready to go up on my BB so with 2 folds I pooosh T700 with K6s and get one caller tabling A5s. Flop is K86, Turn is another 8 and the river fills my Boat! Back in the game.

As predicted, blinds go up to 200/400 on my BB. 1 early limper, then a raise to T1200 (string bet, leaving T500 behind) and it's folded to me. I see AA and wanting the 1st limper to come along, think a bit before pushing. He folds, I get called, of course and we're off.

AA v 99, Flop is clean but the Turn is DIRTY, making his Set and I'm walking back to make my 1st post!

Man I LOVE live poker!!! GL out there

a push here is fine, the antes live are very big, and it makes you go into push/fold mode earlier.

This is hardly an overbet with < 11X BB and an ante. This is a push or fold spot. No way am I doing anything else here. Im pushing this 85% of the time, and folding the other 15%.
