In America, this guy would (hopefully) be sent to an asylum and able to get out if his psychological condition was cured or radically moderated. Doesn't England have something similar?

I kind of disagree. I'm glad this guy is locked up. This doesn't really make me sad at all. The phrase "wheelie bin" makes me sad.

I'm sure he had a psychological assesment before going to court. However, we don't have that many in-patients on psychiatric wards these days, and care for the psychiatrically ill tends to be "community based" wherever possible. Essentially this is following a US (Reagan era?) style model.

I'm sure this case will successfully appeal for a shorter sentance, sounds like the judge got out of bed on the wrong side.

Peter Ashman, defending, said: "My client is looking for a sentence which is as long as possible. He cannot countenance living in the community at all.

So the dude wanted to be locked up forever? I don't see the problem here, nor the correlation gitmo...

Next?

Obviously you've missed the events at Guatanamo Bay and the power of the Patriot Act.

Give him the needle, or some lead.

Issue solved, giving someone a home society pays for is exactly what he wants. Prison should not be a reward.

Yeah, you have to admit that society is safer with him locked away, but by imposing that sentence the judge violated his Constitution protection against cruel and unusual... oh wait... nevermind they don't have that over there.

Same here. That is, until I discovered that they come with a free bottle of wine.

I only came to this post to discover what a wheelie bin was.

I am so disappointed.
