You gonna take the Over or the Under?

My wife is on this kick she calls "getting affairs in order".

We're young and healthy but she is pushing to get wills, living wills, etc. laid out. I don't have a problem with this but it is making both of us think about some things we have never considered.

So the question is: Over or Under?

Once you die that grizzly death fighting an 88 year old widow for a seat at the Euchre table because she is wielding a razor sharp Japanese ninja throwing star -- OR -- simply go to sleep and never wake up ...

Do you want to be buried in the traditional way (Under, embalmed and put in the ground) or do you want to be creamated (Over), or both?

I'm interested in why you choose one option or another. Or maybe there is an option I'm not even considering.

My current thought is to be creamated and have my ashes spread over my favorite place in the world which happens to be a deep canyon in the Gallatin Mountain range in Montana. Waterfalls, mountains, many critters, and very virgin land.

I suppose I could be both Over and Under. I'd be creamated and then have my ashes buried in the Cemetary next to my parents and grandparents. But I feel that if I'm gonna be reduced to ashes I might as well have them placed in beautiful place. It's not like that will make a snatch hair width of difference to me at that point ... but I like the thought while I'm still alive. And now I need to get those thoughts in writing.

I have never contemplated the Over/Under question before even though I had my mother creamated and then buried (in an Urn) as per her wishes.

Right now I'm not even considering the standard embalming/burial route. Maybe I should. And if so, why?

I'm working to sort things out here, thanks for any thoughts you offer.

And please don't bother with the pitcher/catcher references. It would be boring as well as a testament of your homophobia.

Over. I love BBQ's.

Under. The thought of being burned just doesn't sound appealing to me. Also, I want to have a tombstone for my descendants and other family members to see. Lastly, I certainly don't want to end up on someone's mantle. That's just weird.

Re: You gonna take the Over or the Under?

Being a cheapskate and knowing what formal burials cost, I will be cremated. I really don't care what happens after that. If my family wants to keep the urn in the living room, throw it off the back of a cruise ship or shoot it out of a cannon, I really don't care.

Why force your family to pay for a coffin, plot, embalming, etc. after you die. Your death will be traumatic enough (at least if you are not a total jackass) for your family so don't put any more of a financial burden on them by requesting a "Big Sendoff".

If you want to do something useful, give it to science. That's my view. Someone may as well get some use out of my rotting carcass.

I want to end up on someones mantle, so that I can haunt the house and do kewl stuff like spy on the teenage daughter getting changed (hey I'm dead, what do I care if she's related?)

I hope that's how this death thing works, or I'm going to be really disappointed.

Uhm, no. So I don't get the reference. This is the wife's deal, I'm just playing along.

Burned, and I want to have my ashes scattered from the roof of the nearest nurse's communal quarters around wash day.

It'll take em weeks to get me out of their knickers.

I am the opposite of 4 2 it, I want the biggest crypt my remaining dollars can buy. A good one where you can go in, read by candlelight the many warm testimonials to my life. Maybe take a staircase down into a lower level with more portraits, busts, and video retrospectives. The other three lower levels would, of course, be a fun house. Anyway, I'm quite certain there is more chance of being brought back to life, albeit maybe only in zombie form, if you are buried and not cremated and this is my biggest concern.

Re: You gonna take the Over or the Under?

Burial is such a ridiculous waste of space. Whether you believe in God or not once you die it's just going to be an empty shell (well, unless you believe in Thor, Odin etc.) which will start rotting and stuff.

Cremation all the way baby, or possibly I'll donate my body for medical students to carve up.

Why? There's nothing down there anyway. In fact, I want all my [censored] buried with me like an Egytian pharoah. Why would I suddenly become concerned about taking up more space when I'm dead? I'd say I'm probably taking up less resources as a corpse than alive. [censored] it, I'm going to buy some old family burial ground, turf them to the curb, and start building my own giant tomb.

Re: You gonna take the Over or the Under?

I'm going with being creamated, the thought of insects and what not feeding on my rotting body kind of creeps me out.

Put me in an urn and bury me. It helps me to go to mothers grave so I want to leave that option for my kids.

I'd go the ashes spreaded somewhere interesting route.

Probably the fountains at Bellagio.

Re: You gonna take the Over or the Under?

there's only one way to go... and that's to have your body stuffed - and write a will that says for your family to get your stuff - they have to keep you around.

If they stuffed you right - they could use you as a coat rack.

I like it. In fact, those 5 or 6 figures on the roof would be, as governmentcheese says, stuffed corpses, maybe of my family, manipulated into holding instruments. Anyhow, who's to say those people on the roof are not, really, dead. It looks, after all, like some kind of old German fun "haus". I wouldn't trust those krauts.

im going cremated.
1. dont want any chance of coming back.
2. i like the idea of sending everyone left on a scavenger hunt of places to place some of my ashes.

Yeah, over/under, pitcher/catcher, top/bottom, different ways of referring to some sexual relationships.

see, the fact that you thought of this when posting the thread worries me more than anythign else. i had zero idea what you were talking about when you said pitcher/catcher. the fact that merely typing the words over/under make you think of homosexual sex enough that you had to type a disclaimer about it makes me think you might be more homophobic than the average bear.

Naw. I don't give a rat's a$$ what people do. Never have.

My ex-father-in-law however used all those terms interchangably to refer to any gay, any person he decided was gay, and a nat buzzing his head. So as I wrote it I figured someone in OOT would derail things with homophobia or a lame attempt at humor. Not so far from your thinking actually.

NorCalJosh 10-14-2005 01:33 PM

Re: You gonna take the Over or the Under?

not far from my thinking? i required a detailed explanation from you to even understand what the hell you were talking about. and i certainly wasnt trying to be funny. and i most certainly have no desire to hijack this gem of a thread. it just seems to me that the fact that you felt you had to include that disclaimer at the end says more than anything else to me. its like the people who go "i'm not racist, my best friend is black". ya feel me? i'm more than willing to admit i'm wrong about that. but that was the first thought that came to mind.
