Casino Nova Scotia

The wife and I will be spending 3 weeks in Nova Scotia next month hiking, kayaking and such. We'll also spend a few days in Halifax.

Anyone have anything to say about Casino Nova Scotia? Their website sez they have six (count 'em 6) hold'em tables. Any info on the games, quality, etc. would be appreciated.

Cheers...

It's actually a well-run room. Early in the week they top out at 5-10 limit games but Thursdays through the weekend they spread 10-20 and 20-40 if they have enough interest. There is no NL Hold'em allowed in Nova Scotia except for the occassional tournament and even then it takes them about six months to get a permit. The wait list can get very long so I think they will expand. They used to have just four tables. It's a cute, clean room with good food and drink service, good dealers and good supervisors. You'll like it. If you play 10-20 or 20-40, watch out for the guy with the funny hat, sun glasses and the ZZ top beard. He's a good player and he lives there.

His name is Doug, and he's probably the only real long term pro who plays there. He's also one of the nicest guys you'll meet there, although quiet.

I haven't been since I moved in April, but the games were very soft, especially between 7pm and 3am. Call ahead if you're looking to play monday or tuesday: the room used to shut down those days, but they were talking about expanding to every day play.

5/10 is spread on most tables, with one, sometimes two, 10/20 games. The highest they spread is 15/30, but that's rare (although I hear it happens more often on Sunday afternoons).

The 5/10 plays at about the level of .5/1 on Party: donktastic. The 10/20, my regular game, can get a bit tight, but it usually only takes one more donk entering as a TAG leaves to make it very profitable. I have played in 10/20 games there that averaged 7 to the flop. 10/20 is a little more aggressive, but often stupidly so, with identifiably bad players raising gutshot draws, and check-raising the nuts forcing the field to call two BB just because check-raising is cool.

One word of warning: the table talk is almost unbearable. There's not much trash talking, but the discussion of odds and outs is non-stop at times.

Thanks for the tips. If I'm earning I think I can stand the table talk...but you never know.

Cheers.

I played in Casino Nova Scotia in Halifax last Friday night / Saturday morning. It was the last night of a two week vacation in N.S.

The games were well run and soft. I started out playing 5-10 but moved to 10-20 when a seat became available. The 15-30 game never got off.

The rake is a big drain. They drop a dollar for a bad beat jackpot anytime there is a flop. The rake is 5%. In the 5-10 game it is capped at $4. In the 10-20 game the cap is an incredible $8!

I still managed to have a very profitable session. A nice way to end a vacation.

Just got back from NS. I got in 5 sessions at 5-10. Softest games I've ever played.

Well run room; enjoyable all around.

I liked Halifax a lot. Good luck there. Hopefully poker will continue to grow there.
