What would you like to see in a bar/restaurant

We are in the pre-pre planning process of starting a bar/restaurant, w/ emphasis on the bar part. We have yet to develop a menu etc, and are currently brainstorming. We hope to open a place, that caters to single young people, with a core group of regulars. The bulk of our profits will probably be comming from alchohol sales, but I would like to get together a simple menu. The best idea I had, was to model dishes after a couple of the las vegas hot spots. Send one of our guys out, once a quarter, to a couple of the more hip places, and model the food after them. Ie, the kobe beef mini-burgers, etc. I figure most of your guys are the type I would want to cater too, so what are your thoughts?

Guess typical bar food is good, with some specialties....but please offer good microbrew beers. GL with the biz.

I really like those electronic trivia games they have in Buffalo Wild Wings and such.

Good hotwings are never a miss. A decent beer selection, too.

Yes, this was another idea I had. Since chicken wings are so simple to prepare, and quick, I was going to make 7-8 different homeade "gourmet" sauces, and have sampler platters or just serve them all. Any specific beer reccomendations would be awesome too.

The theme, at least in my mind, is hopefully, going to be an "upscale", modern meets rat pack, with football specials on sunday/monday, fri/sat will be more of a "club" night, and then random drink specials for wed/th.

All you really need are hot scantily clad bartenders and waitresses. This is a proven formula that I wholeheartedly endorse.

Re: What would you like to see in a bar/restaurant

Depends on where- is this in a legit urban area? If not this idea won't work. Also Have some absurd deal like three dollar pitchers from 7-9 to get them in early, then they will stay and but expensive [censored] after that, or another popular one ive seen is girls drink free for an hour earlyin the evening which draws heavier drinking guys in

Riverman 12-30-2005 05:09 PM

Re: What would you like to see in a bar/restaurant

Also, one thing thata I like is places that put on cool movies on plasmas, for some reason it is so cool when youre really [censored] up

It would help to know what region this bar will be in, in order to tailor the beer/menu selections accordingly.

Penny pints and nickel pitchers... then jack up the cover charge. Thats what they used to do at U of I back before they passed a law that made illegal the sale of booze below cost. The Rock Bottom Brewery in Arlington VA does a Wed night happy hour and has $1 pints. You cant move in theat place on $1 pint night. They move lots of food in addition to the beer sales.

PS Wings are not upscale

How does a bar owner get a million dollars? Answer – He starts with 2 million.

I’ve been in the bar business for over 10 years, it’s a tough, tough racket. If you have no experience in the business (and I don’t mean “I worked as a bartender”) then don’t do it .If you want to PM me some specifics (where it will be located; sq ft, capacity, things like that) I will try to help you

Sorry but if you get one of these you have a crappy bar IMO. Personally I like a good bartender first of all, no matter the decor, a good batender will always be a draw for me. Other than that, too many TV drives me crazy. I dont mind a projection TV when a big game is on, but on a day to day basis a TV in each corner of the bar is fine. Also if you really want me to leave hire a live band. I go to shows all the time, I go to bars to socialize with my friends, not yell over some toll singing Jimmy Buffet too loud.

Again just my opinon.

To expand on "good beer selection," to me that means having both a good selection of microbrews/imports but also the standard domestic macrobrews so your place doesn't look too snooty.

Is the Vegas market representative of your prospective patrons? Is your area similar to Vegas? Are you going to allow gaming and stripping in your club?

This seemed to make sense to me, Vegas has arguably some of the best food in America. Why not copy off an already good thing, it really doesnt have anything to do withe gambling/stripping in Vegas anymore.
To Diablo:
Yes we have money, not enough yet Im sure, but we will have enough eventually.

To everyone:
Yes, we will have super hot cocktail waitresses, and Id like to get good, old school, bow tie wearing, listen to all your bitching, bartenders.

As far as the naysayers, I have family that owns abotu 35 Italian restaurants around St. Louis (where the bar wil be), and th midwest, and my uncle (the one who owns it), has told me since I was knee high to a duck, the people who say you are not going to make it in teh restaurant business, are the failures, the ones who tried, and couldnt hack it. I have gotten a lot of negative reactino from people in the business, but hopefully with his tutelage, we will be alright.

PS Chicken wings can be upscale, if you spin it right

You need to travel more. Vegas has a small number of fantastic restaurants, that is all. Most are average if not sub par, and most of the big name restaurateurs who have places in Vegas are actually licenses run by the casinos. Its always close, often very good, but never as good as the real thing.

Back to the topic, think 1950's martini lounge. White jacket bartenders (mixologists) with bow ties catering to the mid-tier who think they are the high end consumer. Add a decent tap pas menu and impeccable oak/leather banquettes and you might have a good formula. If you need management, steal from the best in NYC & LA. Rely on experienced people for staffing and buildout... don't do it yourself.

okay, after reading this old StLantny post I'm convinced guids is the same guy, as Stlantny stopped posting on 10/16/05 and guids registered on 10/24/05. Not that this is any significant relevation, as I'm not sure there was an overwhelmingly good reason to ban him in the first place. I'm just trying to insert some drama here.

ps. found the reason he was banned here.
