Math GRE

Sorry to be such a nerd

But apparently I have to take the Math GRE. I was wondering if anyone who's taken it can shed some light on it.

I got an 800 on the Math portion of the General GRE, but I know this is gonna be way different. I know that I'll need to refresh my calculus and linear algebra. But that's about all I know.

Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare? Can I just do it from a book?

And here's a gift since this is a selfish post:

Re: Math GRE

The Mathematics subject GRE is going to bear no resemblance to the general GRE, except that both are standardized tests about math. Calculus and linear algebra aren't likely to be enough; I'm pretty sure it covers a good deal of number theory, analysis, and group theory, among other things. I'm guessing somewhat, because I didn't take it, but I remember looking at a guide for it and thinking all of that stuff was on there. Subject GREs are generally beasts, unlike the general - I answered only two thirds of the questions on the physics GRE, with 6 or so incorrect answers, and that was good for 88th percentile.

Re: Math GRE

If I remember correctly (8yrs ago - thins could be very different now) the math GRE is one of the easier subject tests. You need to know some basic results from different maths courses (beyond calculus, eg groups,
number theory, algebra - nothing too fancy though). The scores
tend to be skewed to the higher end (kinda like the math GRE section). You should at least look at some tests to see what material you need to polish on. A high score will not help too much, but a low score could hurt.
