Dog suggestions
I'm considering getting a dog, I'm not concerned about traveling and leaving it behind cause I have alot of local family/girlfriend who have their own place. I say that off the bat because everytime I bring the idea of getting one to a friend they tell me I'll never beable to travel, anyhoo.
Things I am looking for: - Small-medium sized - Can handle indoors for long periods of time and not get too stir crazy, I'd walk it daily - Doesn't shed - Not too rare/wierd so I can actually find one - I don't know much about how much price changes from breed to breed, but I would probably be up for anything < 1k$ CA. I'd prefer 250~500 range though. - Some level of personality (I think only dog lovers can know what I mean here) - Isn't abnormally loud and/or can be disciplined fairly well - Not too girly looking Thanks in advance. |

some type of terrier, I have had a two Scottish Terriers, although sometimes they may have more attitued than you want
just go to the pound and pick one out with small feet that you like |

This is my baby, Winston Churchill, before you go spending a thousand dollars on a dog, you should search online for the type you want and check to see if there is a rescue shelter within your driving area, you will have to pay for the shots and neutering fee and maybe a small donation on top of that but you can get a great dog this way, as Winston is proof of. well i was beaten to it, but i'll restate it...
its pointless/tragic to get a dog type in your mind and drop 1k at a breeder to get it when over 5 million dogs are euthanized yearly in animal shelters alone... my advice would be to look up the animal shelters in your area, set a day aside and go look through all of them. there are great dogs with great personalities in there, and one of them will definately grab your attention and heart. at least seriously consider doing this, if it's not to much to ask. /end bleeding heart |

Blue Heeler (or Australian Cattle dogs) are perfect. They match your description and are super-trainable and have a great temperment.

i have a rat terrier, unbelievably awesome dog.
very smart, cute, and very adaptable. can lead a real active lifestyle, or just sit on the couch for most of the day. can vary from 6lbs up to 30 depending on the breed lines. can be had for 200-300 bucks. she rarely barks, and has a great personality. check them out, great dogs, not hyper at all like jack russels. |
Grooming vs Shedding
- Doesn't shed
******************************************* Keep in mind if you get a dog that does shed you will need to take them to the dog groomers to get them clipped (unless you do it yourself). My brother has a Dalmation and he has black/white dog hair all over his house. Just don't wear black pants if you sit down on his couch. - Some level of personality (I think only dog lovers can know what I mean here) ********************************************** Terriers and Poodles get my vote on personality. - Not too girly looking ************************************************ My favorite dogs are poodles because they are very athletic and intelligent. Believe it or not they were hunting dogs. A dog walker I know has a black standard size poodle (big dog!) and it can chase down deer and 'herd' the deer right to her. When she walks dogs she takes about 5 at a time to the open spaces of Colorado. Sometimes dogs will not want to leave so she has a her poodle trained to chase the other dogs down, grab their collar, and drag them back. This is a VERY IMPRESSIVE DOG. If you want to be Mr.Macho in front of your friends you can get a pit bull. |

Cock-a-poo (Cocker spaniel and poodle mix)
This is what our last dog was and it was great. Very smart, quiet, and didn't shed. I think purebred cocker spaniels shed a lot. |

I would also recommend looking at shelters first. That said, my sister raises mixed breeds-- there are always a ridiculous number of dogs around--so I've been exposed to a lot of breeds and without a doubt the coolest two dogs I've ever had are pugs. They have great personalities and they really love people, which is a big thing in my book. I have a beagle that is very cute and happy go lucky. In fact, he gets along with dogs and other people better than any creature I've ever run into, but he's a hound and pretty independent. He just doesn't really need humans, so he doesn't get attached like the pugs do. (never get a hound if you don't live out in the middle of nowhere and can let them run loose, away from highways) |

How is it a bad dog. Ive had mine for 5.5 yrs and he is a great dog. Highly intelligent with lots fo personality. Another good bread might be a Jack Russell.

For a new dog owner I'd recommend a black or yellow lab. They are friendly, great with friends and family, trainable, and loyal. Easy dog to raise from a puppy or take in as an adult.

[/ QUOTE ] I second this. I've had a dog for the past for four years that I got from the Humane Society. Part Beagle, part I don't know what. They picked her up as a stray. Great dog, cost $85. |

Lots of good suggestions here but I will chime in. With what your looking for I would limit it to a Boston Terrier, pug and bulldog. The Boston's are great but usually hyper and they might struggle being indoors all day while your at work but they do have great personalities. Pugs and bulldogs also have good personalities and both are pretty lazy so might be a little better if left alone for long stretches. If you have kids or plan on having them sometime soon I wouls probably go with the pug. The thing about the short nose dogs like this is they snore and can't be left outside long in the heat so if you are worried about them tearing up your house or apartment while your gone you probably don't want to get a puppy. I have a boxer they are a little big and hyper and need plenty of outdoor time but they are the best with kids and pretty cool dogs.
