HPFAP or Weighing the Odds - which one first?
 

I have read SSH and I am rereading it now. I have read TOP and need to reread it, but I will wait a couple of months for that. I have HPFAP and Weighing the Odds on their way right now. Which of these two should I read first, given that I am currently playing 3/6 online?

You're playing at a different level than me, but I found HPFAP a bit advanced for the current level I'm playing, 1/2. If you want to bone up on fundamentals, I'd suggest Weighing the Odds. If you feel your fundamentals are strong, try HPFAP first, and then review with Weighing the Odds.

Weighing the Odds.

And by all means, follow SSHE's starting hand advice in the games you are playing (tight or loose, as the case may be). The HPFAP starting hand guidelines are sub-optimal for 3-6 online games.

HPFAP is much more advanced than weighing the odds.

if you're an intermediate, i'd read weighing the odds.

if you are an expert and playing tough games, i'd read HPFAP.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like I should probably start with WtO then. I may take a bit of time to bone up on my 6max play after reading it. It would do me some good, I'm sure.

am I the only one who didn't really like Weighing the Odds? no offense to King Yao of course, but I would pick HPFAP a million times before WTO

at the risk of getting banned, HPFAP can give me a headache at times. and i think alot of it is geared towards high limit tight games (there is a fair amount on loose games, but i don't think it could have been foreseen where poker is now when the book was written). although i think HPFAP and TOP are the bibles of poker. HPFAP is very, very situational at times, which could be overkill at lower limits. probably why they wrote SSHE.

one little thing about most good books is they still get bogged down at points because the authors seem fascinated by some arcane statistical property. or some really unique way of looking at the game.

Everything is relative. I have been playing in some 1/2 limit games online with people who treated it like 15/30 and vice versa. You'll have to read both those books eventually, so just read the one you feel like reading first, then the other, or bits and pieces of both to let concepts sink in. The Yao book really emphasizes the math after dealing with psychology. HEPFAP talks about specific tactics that are mathematically and psychologically based.
