there are suggestions that it is a manufactured deficiency. microsoft states it's a result of an overly-ambitous multi-country launch.

I find it odd that they don't have enough to sell, yet they've given away thousands of consoles over the last few months (one an hour here in Canada, and one every ten minutes (!) I believe in the US).

I think Microsoft likes the supply problems, because it will get them some attention by the media and make the system seem like *the* thing to get this holiday season. I'm fairly sure, they will be readily available by Christmas (the first Xbox was hard to find for like two weeks, and then it was in stock everywhere).
