What kind of shirts are good to wear alone

What type of shirt looks good just with jeans or khaki pants (links useful), likely untucked? Abercrombie shirts tend to do the job but I refuse to wear them. Are striped shirts (seem very common lately) the best bet, what styles?

Also, if a sweater is worn over a shirt, is it best to go with a standard neck or v-neck?

For me the answer is all shirts.

that's actually a good point -- almost every shirt is fine alone, though some very plain ones like a plain white one look kind of dumb. i should be more specific -- any links to shirts people like wearing alone in a casual setting (for instance, white with stripes seems more casual than black)?

are polo shirts or button down shirts too obvious? vertical stripes for button downs, solids for polos
