What and Where to Play in Tunica
 

I will have an opportunity to go and play 2-4 days in Tunica in early to mid-September. I have never played live other than home games.

Comments on casinos/ games welcome. I presently play mostly 2/4 limit, but also some sit n go NL multis, and limit O/8 up to 2/4. I can carry what bankroll I want within reason (hundreds to a few K). Advice I have had so far from a friend is that I should play up at least one level due to the average level of play being even weaker than online.

Any direction to information regarding appropriate rake would be appreciated.

I always stay and play at the Gold Strike but next time its the Horseshoe if I can get a room.

Gold Strike spreads 3-6 and has a very inexpensive rate for rooms if you book in advance through the poker room and play five hours of poker a day.

If you want to sit and play a soft freindly game that is good for absolute newbs, go down to Sam's Town and play 2-4. The players all seem to know each other and they have always been very nice to me when I played there.

If you want real poker then the Horseshoe is best, the Gold Strike is second, the Grand is third (I like the Pink Chip game but have only played it one time) Sam's town gets honorable mention and the absolute softest live game I ever played was an hour at Hollywood in Tunica. I was up $99 playing 3-6 in about one hour. The poker room is not recomended by the general 2+2 population so take this very small sample with a grain of salt.

I like Gold Strike, although I have never played at the Horseshoe. Gold Strike spreads 3/6, 5/10, 1/2NL (I think 200 min buy in no max) Holdem. They also run a 3/6 O8 w/ a full kill when they can get it going and a 1/5 or 2/10 Stud game. I usually play the 3/6 game and it is a great game, lots of weak and loose players. Sams Town offers 2/4 and 4/8 Holdem. I am not sure about the Horseshoe or the Grand. I know that Sams Town has a $80+$20 tourney on Saturdays (no rebuys). The others have tourneys throughout the week, but I am not sure of the buy ins or times.

If you want to make good money while you are down there which I am assuming you do then play the 4-8 at Sam's Town. People that were playing there were terrible.

I had two other buddies and myself at the same table and people were raising and then folding when they didn't hit...and they didn't check, I mean they just folded.

Gold Strike is good, but I have never played at the Horseshoe. I wouldn't reccomend the NL there because the max buy in's are huge and normally just old rocks play and gang up on the new people in the game.

Sam's Town is where it's at.

The Horseshoe room is the best, hands down. The new room just opened about a month ago and it's one of the best in the country. Limits range from 4-8 to 20-40, and 1-5 stud. The PL players have been playing $300 limit. If you have to get on the list ask for a pager so you can wander around while you wait. If you want a comp just ask. The buffet is the best by far and if you dont want to get up you can have food from the snack bar brought to you at the table, just don't stiff the runner. Gold Strike has a nice room but the penny slots around the room get loud. Sam's Town is a toilet. The vast majority of the time it's full of rocks and nits but they have to only 2-4 in town if your looking for low limits or just to slum. The Corky's buffet at ST is good. Don't even walk in to Hollywood. The poker room is stuffed in the back, and I mean stuffed. Same players day in and day out playing the one table open. Avarage age? 92.

Sam's Town closed the Corky's buffet and moved it downstairs to the main buffet. It now, effectively, sucks. I would not recommend it. You can not even make BBQ Nachos anymore, which I thought was the best part.

I thought Horseshoe had $3-6. I know they advertise for it. But you deal there, not me.

I've never seen it. 4/8 is the lowest there at the Shoe. 3/6 next door at the Gold Strike is pretty awful.

The HS definintely has a great room. Dealer are good and the floor is professional.

My only complaint - -and I know for a fact I'm not alone on this - is the smoking on the rail. It just totally screws up the concept of a smoke-free room if there are going to be people standing on the rail billowing clouds of smoke into the room. Sometimes it casues people to request table changes - which is just another thing the brush has to manage.

Right now, the floor/dealers tell them to stand back 3 feet - but this is obviously a weak solution at best. At the very least, put up signs that say to back away 3 feet (people still put their ash trays RIGHT ON THE RAIL) even though it's beveled. There really needs to be a designated smoking stand or something to give the smiokers a distinct place to go to smoke. Most the smokers are not totally obnoxious, and would use a place if it was marked as the place to go.

Or maybe hang some glass to keep the smoke out.

Chipr777, maybe you and your colleagues can come up with an improvement.

Again, great room - just this one flaw.

most here prefer the room at the horseshoe.

it is true that the 4/8 is the lowest that is spread there.

the new room there is REALLY terrific.

there are about a zillion threads in this forum repeating most of the information given here.

just do a search in the B&M forum for 'Tunica' in the subject-line for the past 3 months or so and you will get all kinds of information.


I'm pretty much a Horseshoe/Gold Strike guy. They are walking distance right-next-door to each other...so if the line is looking a little long at Horseshoe I'll check things out over there.
I very occasionally play at the Grand.
I never play at Sam's Town or Hollywood. My experiences at both wre something along the lines of "Why am I wasting my time here when I could be a better room just up the road?"


The comps at Horseshoe are legit. And it was a matter of me just getting back from Vegas to realize why people drool for the comps so much there.
Eating at the table (and having the runner bring you the food) while playing at a 4/8 game is evidently NOT common-place in most rooms.
Getting comps for the buffet just for the asking even if you've only been playing 2-3 hours at 4/8 or 10/20 is also NOT common-place.


I know we've kind of laughed at steamboatin and bigdaddy when they talk about how cool it is for them to see actual chip-runners at Caesar's Indiana.
Well, I'm just the opposite in that when I'm outside of Tunica I'm kind of like, "Wait....you mean they will only bring you food to the table if you play on a higher-stakes table?"

Tunica (and specifically the Horseshoe) comps are the BOMB!!
Since I rarely play outside the Tunica region I am just now REALLY learning that.

Where is that advertised? I can't remember a 3-6 game at Horseshoe for at least 6 years. There was a 2 person interest list for it last week. We had six 4-8 games going at the time so I think they went ahead and played it.
