I am curious as to what % advantage typical 2+2'ers need to call a push from an equal stack in HU play? Hypothetically you know what cards he has and villian pushes with equal stacks (blinds 200/400 or 300/600). What % advantage do you need to make the call?

Oops..Didn't finish my post. Do you take the first 51% opportunity or do you lay down and utilize steal opportunities and look for higher % play??

How long have we been playing? If its the first hand of the tourney then I'd take 55%. After giving some time to the play I'd want at least 60%.

51% is not a good enough win rate to overcome the juice.

Thanks .. I didn't expect anyone to jump t 51% but wanted to give a somewhat specific example. Setting the blinds at 200/400 or 300/600 I would expect the tourney to be 30-40 mins into play. Just started using pokerstove and trying to get a feel for the numbers. I see its usefullness being the most immediate in my HU game. That is big leak for me. Too many 2nd's. My ITM distribution is horribly off. Although I only have 500-600 tourneys I don't believe its all variance.

Try to stay away from all in pots against an opponent you can outplay. You should only play a huge pot with an opponent in two cases:

1. He is equal or better than you in skill level

2. You have a very strong hand. And I mean very strong.

When the blinds are 300/600? If this is an 800 chip SnG, then we've got a stack of 4k or ~6.5BB. The way to win here is to push very frequently on the button and to call pushes with marginal hands against an opponent who's pushing frequently. If your opponent is dumb enough to play tightly here, then you can fold confidently to pushes without a great hand so that you can grind them down to nothing, but otherwise, you should be looking for small edges.

Good point regarding chip count. 1000 chip start is my base (PP 55) but I suspect at the level I am discussing starting chip count not a significant factor (5000 vs 5000 or 4000 vs 4000)? I guess I was trying to imply that if all things equal what % would be your tipping point?

At 300/600 with 4k each, we're getting 1.35:1. So against a player of equal or better skill, we should call with a hand that has a 42.5% chance of winning. Against a push-bot, I'd be calling 22+, 56s+, T8+, J7+, Q5+, K2+, A2+.

Of course, I'm always hoping that I'm playing against a nit HU. Against someone who I think will consistently fold K2 and gives me walks, my calling range is super tight here (like 66+, JQ+ or so).
