Question on ettiquette

What is the general thought on speaking on a cell phone while at the table?

Re: Question on ettiquette

I think it's OK as long as it's distracting the person talking. I love it when bookies try to play poker and take action at the same time. On the other hand, if it bothers you, grab a walkman and sing along with Free Bird. That seems to do the trick.

A few nights ago, I was playing in a NL satellite at Foxwoods when one of the players took a call early in the first round, and was reminded that it wasn't allowed. If it only serves

as a distraction to the player using it, I'm fine

with it; otherwise, I don't care for the idea.

If someone gets or makes a call on a mobile phone at the poker table, the correct thing to do is to conspicuously turn around and look to see if someone behind you is peeking at your cards. If there is, or even if there isn't, remind the person on the phone that only one person is allowed to play a hand.

Another option in Las Vegas cardrooms is to say, "Hey, I thought using cell phones was illegal this close to the sports book!"

Well, I do it occasionally. Many cardrooms don't allow it however, and if you play any gambling games in the pit it is not allowed.

If you get a call while at the table and it cannot be handled in a couple of sentences, leave the table or at least sit out the hands. Never, make a call while at the table.

I consider it poor manners, but then again I am a grumpy old guy.

Re: Question on ettiquette

Not being a professional poker player (like all of you), I still have a company to run.

So I need to have my cell on me at all times.

But I keep the ringer on vibrate, and never talk on it while actually seated at the table.

If I'm in the middle of a hand when I get a call, I disregard the call and call back after the hand is through.

If I'm seated yet not involved in the hand, I still get up and walk a few feet away, so as not to distract anyone's attention unduly.

Long and short of it is this: I don't like it when someone is sitting in my game talking on a cellphone. I don't think I can define all of the reasons for this feeling, but I can tell you that the feeling exists.

So I can only assume that the same feeling exists for some others. Hence, I take a few steps away from the table.

Damn, am I reasonable or what?!
