Help me plan this trip

next week i am driving from dallas, tx to portland, OR (more specifically grapevine, tx to eugene, OR). i have inputed this info into google maps/earth, yahoo maps, etc... but i know these services don't always show the fastest route, they simply try to find the shortest route. has anyone made a trip similar to this recently? if so, do you have a route you prefer? i am also looking to see some interesting things on the way, any recommendations would be appriciated. thanks for any help.

Drive straight west to the Pacific. Then drive north. Lots to see on the way.

that was my thought, seems to be one of the fastest routes too.
