Re: I\'m a major LAG

i agree this is a weird spot that comes up when someone you know is fairly solid does something off like this and you are faced with this situation.

what are you all doing with TT-QQ/AK here?

Re: I\'m a major LAG

I was discussing this a few minutes ago on AIM with Ozzy 87/bigslick789. He agrees you can't fold in this spot, but interestingly he thought a push was the best play. I wouldn't make that play, but what do you think?

(08:43:47) N 82 50 24: what do you think about that play by Ian J
(08:44:00) N 82 50 24: i think i'd limp for sure
(08:44:04) N 82 50 24: i can't believe he folded
(08:44:16) N 82 50 24: i might raise, but i dunno
(08:44:21) N 82 50 24: prob just limp
(08:58:23) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: interesting spot
(08:58:34) N 82 50 24: u limp?
(08:59:11) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: he doesnt know enough about his opponent to fold
(08:59:23) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: i like to either limp or go all in
(08:59:27) N 82 50 24: yea, i mean, i think a fold is bad
(08:59:31) N 82 50 24: i don't like to push
(08:59:38) N 82 50 24: risking a lot
(08:59:38) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: why not?
(08:59:40) N 82 50 24: to win very little
(08:59:48) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: 3750 to win
(09:00:12) N 82 50 24: yea, so that's less than 20% of stack
(09:00:26) N 82 50 24: and you get called by hands that murder you
(09:00:33) N 82 50 24: except maybe a horribly played AK
(09:01:06) N 82 50 24: i'd limp i think
(09:01:29) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: i dont think you see an overpair often enough that it's profitable to push
(09:01:53) N 82 50 24: prob true
(09:02:00) N 82 50 24: but
(09:02:02) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: and the times he has an overpair you win 20% of the time
(09:02:09) N 82 50 24: yea
(09:02:23) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: and if you lose you still have about 5 big blinds
(09:02:34) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: on party 109 mtts that's plenty to steal
(09:02:43) Ozzy 87/bigslick789: you havent lost your fold equity with that stack

Re: I\'m a major LAG

Ok I think we've come to a consensus that limping behind is the best play. Here is my reasoning for making this very strange preflop fold.

First off, like I said, I haven't seen this guy limp one time yet. Second, he's playing 11% of his hands, and now he decides to limp when he has approximately 9 BB to start the hand. In my mind he's just screaming AA/KK here. My thinking was that limping here is going to get me into a lot of trouble postflop the 85% of the time I don't flop a set.

MLG mentioned calling a bet on a raggish flop like T63 or 842 and then folding the turn if he bet it twice. I think this is a good play in the situation, but what about when he checks the turn? I know if I were him and played AA that way, I'm checking the turn about 95% of the time. Am I just relegated to stacking off on the turn? Or can I check behind and fold to a river bet? Ewwww.

I don't know guys. Very strange fold for me to say the least. I think that if you really look deep into it that there is justification for my play. I think playing for set value when the guy has about 9 BBs is pretty thin. I mean nobody's limping 44 here are they?

So you are assuming no one else (inlcuing the blinds) will limp along behind improving your implied odds?

Good point that I didn't give much thought due to the general tendencies of these tourneys at this stage. All of you know it's very unlikely to be a limpfest and be 6 or 7 to the flop. I would expect maybe 1 more limper and then both blinds. That does make limping more appealing for sure.

Its true that its likely that someone may pop it behind you, but if others have the same read, it may get limped to the blinds.

Its worth 1BB to try.

ian: TT-QQ/AK. your action now?

Re: I\'m a major LAG

I'm guessing that w/ JJ, QQ, and AK, I'd probably make a raise w/o even considering it, and then end up hating myself when we get all in vs. AA. TT seems really close to 99 in the way I'd look at it after his limp. Maybe I would have limped TT just cause it's TT. I don't know. This is such an unusual fold for me that I don't really know what I was doing. Sure felt right though.
