This is what he needs. End of story.

Scratch LIVE is the ultimate software and hardware solution for bridging the analog world of vinyl and the digital world of computer audio files. Using regular turntables or CD players, you can scratch and mix files from your Mac or Windows XP computer's CD or hard drive, add in a live mic input for scratching, and even bypass to standard vinyl if you wish. Scratch LIVE is the complete digital solution for the vinyl junkie -- take your entire collection wherever you go and leave your precious vinyl at home!

Final Scratch owns Scratch Live hard.

Mostly because lots of clubs already have a Final Scratch setup. However you're going to be wayyyy out of the price range with either of those. Truthfully, a shopping trip at a record shop would probably be the best bet.

Does this software stuff actually work? Could you mix a fast beat like D&B on-the-fly without it clanging?

software?

i think he's got software that he's pretty well set up with, and i think it'd be tough for me to figure out a better option for him.

What type of music?

[/ QUOTE ]

hip hop.

Urgh.

Buy the man some turntables. Trust me on this one.

I'd recommend Technics 1200/1210 or Vestax PDX-2000/2300 with Shure M44-7 or M44-G carts and a Vestax 07-Pro mixer. Preferably custom fitted with a Penny & Giles crossfader that's been credit card modded.

Obviously cost is going to be a factor so the above is a bit unrealistic :P but please, for the love of god, TURNTABLES.

maybe around $50-75.

Okay, I'm stupid and I totally missed this the first time I read the thread. Perhaps just continually drop heavy hints that he should really get himself some turntables.

The idea of DJ'ing hip hop on a laptop makes me want to vomit
