GPS navigation system (NSFW)

OK, I've decided that i want a navigation system for my car. Does anyone have any experiences with this? From what i understand the ones worth looking into are Garmin, Magellan and TomTom. What is the best i can get for under $1k or so? Please reference exact models. And nothing that would require factory installation please.

Enjoy!

I have the Garmin Quest. Is easy to use and can be used outside your car. You should be able to find one for under $400. I have used it throughout PA, NYC, NJ, VA, FL and GA without a problem.

edit - Where's the NSFW pics? I took a huge chance clicking on this. At least reward my risk-taking.

Oh well, just check out the Quest. I think it provides the most bang for the buck. It doesn't have the bell and whistles (big screen, touch screen, etc), but it does the job. Now when my wife gets lost, it's because she didn't beleive the GPS was correct.

It was my understanding that they're portable enough to not keep on the dashboard when the car is parked.

Every member of my family has one of these:

Worth every penny. Best GPS system I've used, $750 w/ touch screen and window mount.

Edit: Parents even bought my 16 year old sister one to go with her other present, a lexus suv.

Well, I don't really need it on everyday basis. I'm pretty sure i can get from home to work and back after doing it a hundred times. There are a few situations however where i feel "it would be great right now if i had a navigation system in my glove compartment which i could pull out and put on a dashboard right now"

Savage, Once you get a GPS you won't be able to live without it. It's especially good for going through towns you're unfamiliar with, finding ATM'S and places to eat/places to stay. They are almost never wrong, and you don't have to screw with those pain in the ass cd's like the dvd versions.

garmin pda

I have this one... I like it. I don't really use the pda portion very much, but the GPS part is pretty good. It locks up quickly, an 12 gps recievers, is waas enabled. Its not 100%, the maps aren't perfect. they are doing a ton of construction in my area so it misses some new exits... but overall i would be totally lost without it. I think if i was going to buy one now i would get this one web page
