Port Opening

Hi,
I know very little about ports and networks. Here is the problem:

I am trying to use Bit Torrent/Azureus, and I get an error that I need to open port 6881. this is a new computer, and I have the following setup:

MCafee Personal Firewall
Lynksis Vonage Router
Belkin Wireless Router

Anybody know how I can ensure that all nec. Azureus ports are open on my PC/firewall/routers?

Re: Port Opening

McAffee is probably not allowing this port. Not sure though. To update your firewall do this:

Go to your mcaffee security center.
Click on "Personal Firewall".
Click on "Utilities".
Click on "System Services".
Click "Add".
Enter "Azureus" for the "Program Name".
Emter "6881" for "Incoming TCP/IP Ports".
Enter "6881" for "Outgoing TCP/IP Ports".
Click "OK".
I think you then need to place a check mark next to "Azureus" to specifically open this port up then you can exit your security center.

thanks.

I did that, and I still get the error. my files are downloading though, just slowly (30 kb/sec)

also, internet surfing is impossible while Azureus is running. anyone know why this happens?

Re: Port Opening

It's more than just having the port "open" on all of your networking gear. It's about having the traffic passed to your PC.

My recommendation is to go here: http://testmyports.com/pfexp.php and understand what it is exactly you are trying to do, which is probably port forwarding (because you have an internal IP address most likely).

If that's the case, go to http://portforward.com and find a forwarding guide for your equipment.

Then, when you think you've got everything set up as required, open your torrent client (which will open port 6881 on your PC), then go to http://testmyports.com to test it.
