a) Live rake is ridiculously high compared at small stakes.
b) In addition to rake, many places take $1 every damn pot regardless of pot size for some lame jackpot.
c) I tip a couple bucks if I'm up when I leave the table.

So I worked in a restaurant in DC this summer on the Waterfront for some cash. But:

a.) The price for food is a little steep, hey this is DC Waterfront, and you are also paying for location.

b.) The tax on food in DC is 10%, comparatively high to many places.

c.) Some people left bad tips reasoning a & b makes it correct.

I think the fault in their argument is that servers mainly get paid in tips. We don't set the prices, we have nothing to do with the tax. If you come to a casino, oops I mean restaurant, you agree to pay their high prices and rakes, I mean taxes. You still have someone working for you whose main part of pay comes through tips.

I will tip $1 everytime at 3/6 for a pot of this size, no more and no less.

When the pot gets above 20BBs, then I start to consider tipping more than $1.

I go out to dinner, in large part, for the service. I tip for that service.

I don't play poker for the service.

I fully sympathize with the fact the dealers make a decent chunk of their wages through tips. However, I'm not going to a casino to enjoy their service, I'm going to win money from fish. If I simply want to pay for entertainment, I have other choices I'd rather investigate.

I do go to a restaurant to enjoy the service and I tip for that service.

I tip $1 on every pot in excess of say 3 big bets. Below that, nothing.

That still doesn't alter the fact that tipping is 100% voluntary. The big tippers more than make up for the non tippers.

I tip by discretion. If the dealer is average, I tip when I make a decent pot. If the dealer is awesome (very few experiences with that!), they get $2 for large pots, $1 for mediocre pots, and $2-$3 when they rotate away. Crappy dealers get $1 on huge pots. Nothing worse than a bitchy dealer.
