Concealed Handgun License??

After the shooting in Tahoe and the maniac who shot up the people in the Tacoma mall a couple of weeks ago, I got to wondering. How many poker players have a concealed handgun license and are carrying while sitting at the table?

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

My friend is a NJ state trooper and he's not allowed to carry a firearm into a casino.

I imagine it's the same policy for everyone.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

As far as I know if you try to bring a handgun into a casino and you are not an on-duty peace officer, you can be arrested. Trying it would not be wise at all.

How would anybody possibly know the answer to this question?

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

It depends a little on the state, but in Oregon, the only place a person with a concealed handgun license CANNOT legally carry is in a federal facility, an airport, a courthouse or private property where it is clearly posted firearms are not allowed. However, you can't carry on an tribal lands, so if it is a tribal casino on a reservation, you could be arrested by the tribal authorities. I know that people carry at private cardrooms and non-tribal casinos. I just wonder how many.

Uh, I'll mark down a "no" for you.

Maybe I should have asked if you have a CHL do you carry while you play.

I think most places have posted notices stating you are prohibited from carrying a concealed handgun on the premises.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

That would have made it more clear. Since I understand your question now, I can answer for myself -- yes, I usually do carry a glock with me, especially if I'm playing a kill game.

Here in AZ all of the casinos are on federal/indain lands, on which carrying a firearm on is a big deal and will land you in jail quick. They do not even allow a pocket knife, you the type that has a clip on it that many guys carry in their pocket.

Other than that the laws in AZ prohibit one from carrying in public places like football games and in bars or in any place that posts a sign saying it is not allowed. And yes you see the signs all over the place around Phoenix.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

Regardless of the law I think a private business is allowed to say "no guns up in here"

and if I had a casino I would DEFINITELY not allow guns.

I've only hit up B&M's to play twice in my life (Tunica) and I distinctly remember a sign entering the casino floor that guns and knives were prohibited.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

you can assume that at the casino's most people wont be packing heat, however in underground/home games you can be sure some are. Heres your example
A while back when they busted up the NYC Poker rooms I Believe 4 people in total had weapons and only 1 had a gun. I may be off "slightly" on the numbers here but you get the point. but its also pretty hard to get a carry/conceal permit in NYC so I dunno. (on that note I doubt any body who does carry in NYC really cares for such a thing)

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

You'll be hard pressed to find a casino in Las Vegas that's posted "no guns allowed".

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

There is no law in Nevada prohibiting concealed carry in a casino.

JPinAZ 12-05-2005 07:22 PM

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

Which is why I said it would be hard to find a casino that's posted.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

Sorry, my stumbling way of agreeing with you. My bet is there are plenty of armed citizens carrying wads of cash and more than willing to protect their lives while playing in Nevada casinos.

My dad was walking into Winstar and saw the sign on the door prohibiting guns. He joked to his friend, "Guess I should've left my gun at home," not realizing that he was within earshot of security. They followed him very closely for quite a while I'm pretty sure that all 4 of the OK casinos I've been to have had the same sign on the door.

Mississippi's concealed weapons' permit law specifically prohibits casinos, bars, etc. However, that didn't stop a guy from shooting up Casino Magic in Biloxi several years ago. IIRC, he killed several people. I don't recall, but I doubt he had a permit anyway. The people to fear are not the ones who go to the trouble to obtain a permit.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

concealed carry laws are specific to the state you are in.

very few states allow private businesses to prevent you from carring on private property. you can carry in the mall, banks, etc., that's kind of the whole point.

an almost universal exception to this rule is any business that serves alcohol can prohibit concealed carry. i think all states with concealed carry have this exception.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

A little off-topic, but a private game I was at this weekend had its own "security". The guy seemed a little high-strung. In any event, about 6 hours into the game, the idiot shot himself in the leg with his pistol ... I have no idea what he was doing or why there was a round chambered ... but this idiot supposedly does this for a living. After making sure he didn't hit an artery or a bone (lucky) we called an ambulance and took off before the police showed up.

He's okay, but will NEVER live this down.

Oh, and I will never play that room again, he could just as easily shot one of us in the head.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

The Nevada law allowing carrying in casinos was adopted in the past 5 years or so. Prior to that the casinos could prohibit it at their discretion. Despite the recent incident, I feel relatively safe within the confines of the casinos. Its on the way to the car and home that I sometimes get twitchy.

Canterbury is posted "no firearms" but not correctly in compliance with the law. Whether that matters or not is still up for debate in MN.

Of course, nobody in their right mind would let me near a slingshot, let alone a firearm, so mark me down as a "no."

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

The guy probably had a Glock. They are notorious for discharging when holstered blind (without looking). "Glock leg" is the term for getting a bullet in your leg when holstering a loaded Glock. The retaining strap will sometimes get into the trigger guard. If you keep pushing while encountering resistance, the sucker goes off. No manual safety and double action makes it easy and quick as a defensive weapon, but dangerous for the negligent.

Dude. You know I'm like Al Friggin' Capone Friggin' Junior, right?

Of course, in the tradition of Dirty Harry (my hero ), there's only one handgun worthy of bothering to have a concealed handgun permit for.

And that's what I carry. I keep it just in case my foot gets too sore from kicking well deserving mo-fo's in the nuts, and I have to "get serious about things."

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

So when the trigger gets pulled it goes off? Why would that be a Glock malfunction?

There are SOO many guns that don't have an external safety.

I was a Glock armorer years ago and I felt very confident in it's safety and accuracy.

I always asked myself if glock was so unsafe why are so many city, state, and federal government agencies carrying them?

I can also appreciate people feeling unsafe not having an external safety. I don't feel very comfortable carrying a single action gun cocked and locked. Although I do believe they're safe.

I've had a CCP for 6 or 7 years. I rarely carry though. My understanding is I couldn't even carry it to the casino and take it apart and leave it in my car. Because once I cross the levee (I play in Tunica) then I'm on federal property.

Re: Concealed Handgun License??

I never said it was a malfunction. Never said it wasn't safe either. Glock owners swear by them as simple and very effective (and quite accurate) handguns. Many PD's carry them, although quite a few carry Colt, Beretta, Browning, Kimber etc. You are probably more knowlegable than me, but I can't think of another semi that doesn't have at least one manual safety. There are only a couple of semis I'd carry cocked and locked..Browning Hi Power and a Colt 1911. Even then, it depends on circumstances.

I didn't make up the term Glock Leg. It's pretty well known, just google the term and see the hundreds of hits. It's an affliction even the police suffer with.

I don't doubt that there's a term called "Glock Leg". But I think you defined it as when a Glock goes off. Anyway I wasn't trying to be a jerk and I didn't really think you were being one either.

I'm sorry if I came across as one.

I've been kinda out of the gun buisness for a couple years now. Off the top of my head I can think of a few others that don't have an external manual safety. Kahr and I'm pretty sure Walther P99's don't. Don't laugh when I mention Kel-tek. They are low end but they're reliable.

Anyway the only real complaints I've heard about LE agencies having was the NYPD didn't like the 5.5 lb trigger pull. Glock has since made a "new york" trigger. I believe that's a 10-11lb trigger pull.
