A comment on staking

It seems to me that the biggest threat to tournament poker is the huge percentage of circuit players who are not playing their own money. There are obvious problems with the current situation, and the only solution that I see is full disclosure of who has a piece of who.

Thoughts?

but there are alot of good players with bad bankroll management who can usually get staked for half... i dont see how to stop this from happening.

Perhaps you could explain why you think it's a huge problem? In plenty of other sports/games, the primary competitor is not the same person as the financial backer. This is true in auto racing, horse racing, bicycle racing and even baseball/football/basketball/hockey, where the franchise pays for travel expenses, equipment, and lodging, etc.

Re: A comment on staking

because in poker tournaments, the ppl do the staking are also often competing!
having backers who are outside of the poker world is no problem.

This should be in 'problems with poker' thread and not in its own.

My answer there is applicable here word for word.

It's clearly a problem; how much of a problem is more difficult to determine.

It's a problem because it establishes additional economic incentives for collusion. There's a lengthy discussion of this idea on Jonathan Kaplan's livejournal; I'm too lazy to reprise it here, so here's a link:
