Anyone live in Atlantic City Area??
 

hi all,

I've been playing semi-pro throughout my college years and now i'm trying to become a full time poker player.

I've been considering moving to Atlantic City because my family is in the NY area but i have no experience with Atlantic City whatsoever.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to what to expect and how to find good games (or if there are good games at all) in AC. Also, if you are familiar with the area, where would be a good place to rent an apartment? Any other information on AC would be greatly appreciated.

Moved to near AC to go pro myself about 6 months ago. Still play mostly online and use B&M just to break up the monotony of online poker. There are great lower mid limit HE games all week but it really takes the weekend to bring out the donks in the 40 games and up. There are still some great stud games on the weekends as well or so I hear from the other grinders I haven't invested in the stud education yet. Definately helps to know a few games. If your NL game and bankroll are sufficient 10-25 NL is often good from what I hear. With all that said I really don't recommend moving to AC to play poker. If you can make a living online, why live here of all places? There really is nothing here but casinos. Move to an island, Vegas or LA anywhere but this hole. i live 8 miles west of borg, but unfortunately im not very familiar with the surrounding areas other than the street i live on, which is pretty much quiet and nice.

I've heard Margate is relatively nice. But I agree with above post, why bother moving to AC (besides family considerations)
Play online and move to Vegas!

Margate is nice, so is Ventnor where I live (same Island) Didn't mean to imply there weren't nice places to live, there just isn't anything here.

i've lived in AC for over two years early 2002- Jan 2005. Last January, I moved to the suburbs of Northeast Philadelphia because of this phenomenom I heard about called, "Internet Poker". (Also to be near family and friends, since it's where I grew up)

I agree with Bishop22, you are better off living in a nice area and playing poker online. I basically left Atlantic City because I found no reason to stay in such a slum area to play online poker, where I can be doing it anywhere. There are positives and negatives living in AC. The positives is that you are not forced into marathon sessions because you live in the neighborhood. If a game does not look good, you can always go home. You won't be forced into any games you do not want to be a part of. Other than that, I see no other positives.

The city itself is runned down and very old unless you work your way towards the better side of Ventor (pass tropicana side) or Brigantine (near Borgata). The city is very depressing around this time of the year when it's just cold and slummy.

If you do plan on going with your motive of moving to AC, i strongly suggest you do not live in Atlantic City, but rather Ventor, Brigantine, or suburbs like Absecon or Rent-Friendly Pleasantville. I never lived in Pleasantville myself, but that's just what I assume.

There's just too many positives as to playing on the internet instead of live. Besides for the obvious (getting more hands, better rake, no tipping--although I strongly encourage tipping) AC is just not a very friendly city. You will have a tough time socially without running into degenerates. I can almost gaurantee that the friends you make will be the wrong types of friends. The real cool people that are worth be-friending will want nothing to do with you, and the degenerates will always put you in a bad spot where you will be loaning them $400-$500.

Not to discourage you, but I've also ran into alot of short-session wonders who thought they could be a pro after a few good sessions. You will find these kids mostly in the 1-2, 2-5 NL games. They start living at AC for weeks at a time until eventually they go broke. It's not quite to Foxwoods level yet, in terms of young broke "professional" poker players who is always looking to get staked or a loan, but you can see true degeneracy and obsesssive compulsive disorder from these kids.

It looks like I might have to reconsider my moving plan to AC. Some of you suggested I should consider LA or Vegas. Actually LA would be my first choice if it weren't for the fact that the cost of living is much higher in LA. Also, I've heard people say that the games are softer in AC than in Vegas and LA.

What are your thoughts? Do you think the games in Vegas are profitable enough for someone who doesn't have a huge bankroll to begin with? I've read that even Negreanu couldn't stand the competition when he first moved to Vegas.

I just moved to vegas a little over a month ago. It's a great city. The games in Vegas are almost as juicy as AC so you shouldn't worry about that at all. There are definately more truly "good" poker players in vegas compared to AC, but certainly more than enough fish to go around as well.

Where in Vegas are you at? I was looking at Henderson and the area near UNLV and the Airforce base? I know I know I used search and nothing came up mistly Live at the bike threads
