What is \"bump\"?
A very newb question...what does "bump" mean? I keep seeing it in various posts, and can't quite get the grasp.

Re: What is \"bump\"?
I believe it is a way to move the posting to the top of the list (bump it to the top) in an effort to get a response.

Re: What is \"bump\"?
...or it can be to raise. Like, "let's bump it to 3000."

Re: What is \"bump\"?
ohh, I forgot it also is used when sniffing cocaine. Such as, "Can I get a bump of that?"

Re: What is \"bump\"?
So chrisg here provides us with a perfect example (?)...
He is so enthusiastic about TaoTe's 2nd post that when he says "bump" he is recommending that TaoTe's post be "bumped" up to the top? |

[/ QUOTE ] He's causing it to be moved to the top of the forum for whatever reason. People can bump threads because they want more replies, but they can also do it because they think something was a really good post that more people should have the opportunity to read. I've seen posts that were fairly old get bumped by experienced posters simply so they can be re-discovered by a new group of readers. And then there is the infamous Shana Hiatt thread . . . . (roundabouts 1.76 million views as of this writing) |
Re: What is \"bump\"?
Haven't seen the Shana Hiatt thread yet. 1.76 million viewings is hilarious...gee, do you think most poker players are men?
Anyways, so when a poster says "bump", he's asking the moderator to keep the thread at the top of the forum? Or is it more accurate to say "telling" the moderator to do so? (i.e. does the moderator have full discretion here, or is he basically here simply to keep 'dirty words' etc. from being posted and therefore in most cases simply adheres to "bumper's" request?) |
Re: What is \"bump\"?
I don't think it's a message to the moderator at all - just a way of forcing it to actually happen. Most recently replied to threads are always at the top so if a post falls off the first page, you can return it to the top of the list by replying to it. A "bump" is just replying without actually saying anything. It's only purpose is really to get the thread back to the top.
If you want the thread to remain at the top you can ask a moderator to "sticky" it and that is completely their discretion as to whether they do so. If you promise not to bump it, you can view the Shana thread here . |
