Trying to figure out party satellites (rant)

Yup - It's another "Party-gripe" post.

Go figure.

I've been playing some of the satellites and qualifiers in hopes of winning a seat to a big event like the PPM V cruise or the Aussie Millions.

The difference between the qualifiers for the 'semi-finals' and the 'super-satellites' is kind of a pain to figure out if you aren't already familiar with it.
I know what's happening there. But in almost every one that I play in there's someone always asking what on earth they are playing for.

I can't help but think that more people would play in them if it was more apparent what the prize was.

I also think a lot of players get confused between the two titles 'Party Poker Millions' and 'Million-dollars guaranteed'.

I don't blame them. Party does not make things clear at all.

In cardplayer magazine I recently saw an ad that said that the PartyPoker cruise is scheduled to make stops in Cozumel and Cayman Isls.
I had to read an ad in cardplayers magazine to find out more details on the freaking Party Poker cruise. Kind of annoying.
I'm assuming it departs out of Miami...but it could leave out of Tampa or Houston or somewhere else for all I know.

It's not THAT vitally important to me. But you would think that party wouldn't be going so far out of their way to keep it a secret.
On their site, it just says 'cruise to mexico' or something like that.
Last year this departed out of San Diego with stops on the Pacific (Mexican Riviera) side and I had to casually see in a magazine that this will evidently be different this year.

Recently they added some qualifiers for a tournament in London in a few weeks.
Didn't take me too long to find the part on the web-site where I could see what dates this tourney in London actually takes place.
This was a refreshing change because I was NEVER able to find the dates for the Aussie Millions on their website.
I had to go to poker-pages to find out when the main-event is.

curiously enough....my availability on those dates actually DOES make a difference as to whether or not I want to try to win a seat.

Finally, they just added some satellites and qualifiers for a package to the CPC which I believe is listed as a Canadian tourney.
I have no idea where in Canada this takes place or when.
It is not listed anywhere on party's site that I could find.

So I'm off to poker-pages again just to try to figure out what these CPC Party packages entail.
Wouldn't it make sense that more people would play these things if they knew more specifics about the prize-package?
Wouldn't it make sense to do it as Stars does it? (where on every satellite there is some brief info PLUS a link to the page on their website giving the exact dates and location of the big event you are trying to win a seat to)

Hey Bob,
I'm still trying to find out what the CPC things is too. For the cruise it departs from Fort lauderdale.

Re: Trying to figure out party satellites (rant)

Thanks for the confirmation on the cruise departure.

Don't spread it around though....evidently party doesn't want people to know so they might take action against you if they find out you've been telling people details about it.

CPC also stands for the Caribbean Poker Classic at the end of November.
but on a couple of the satellite lobbies on Party it specifically says "CPC Special Qualifier - 1 entry to the Canadian Special for every 10 players' or something like that.

I went to poker-pages and couldn't find anything in Canada that this would be.
So it either isn't on poker-pages as best as I can tell...OR they are saying 'Canadian' when they actually meant 'Caribbean'.

The possibility of a typo or some confusion between Canada and the Caribbean actually wouldn't surprise me on this one.

I've sent an e-mail to Party asking what the hell CPC is and I look forward to hearing back from them in at least 48 hours with a worthless response.

In the meanwhile, I can play in one of the super-qualifiers or satellites in a few minutes if I like.
Of course, since I have ZERO idea what I would be playing for I think I'll take a pass.

New update on the CPC. Check out http://www.canadianpokerchampionship.com Bob. It appears tbey don't even have a date or location yet? lol. It also says you must be Canadian to play in it, except for a few of TJ Cloutiers friends. Tj seems to be the spokesman or such. The whole thing seems pretty stupid, not sure.

Re: Trying to figure out party satellites (rant)

thanks johnny.

the first response you got is kind of amusing.

"Yeah...we get all that stuff. But where the hell is it??"

I tried to ask on one of the tables of today's satellite if anyone knew when and where it takes place....and was told that observer-chat is disabled.

I'm looking around on the site you linked...and I can't find info on dates OR the Niagara Falls location.

On the '2005 schedule' tab it does not mention any specific casino.
It says that Day 1 of the $5,000 championship event is 'Tuesday' at noon.
No month or date mentioned. Just 'Tuesday'.

They must have gone to the Party school of website design.

Still trying to figure this out because I'm just a curious guy.

Party is giving away a package worth about $9k.
and I'm pretty sure that $9k in American dollars does not equal $5k in Canadian bucks. Even with travel expenses, etc I'm guessing there is some kind of 'underlay' in these sat's favoring Party.

Anyway...obviously you saw that 'niagara falls' was mentioned somewhere on the site...so I'll try to find it.

MicroBob 10-25-2005 12:15 AM

Re: Trying to figure out party satellites (rant)

Okay....you edited the previous part where you said 'Niagara Falls'.

I agree with your edited post where you say that it does not appear they have a date or location yet.

Part of it looks like it's some sort of 'tour type of championship'.

I don't think that Party would be running satellites for a tournament that doesn't exist yet OR for one that only accepts Canadian players.

I have not heard back from Party in regards to my e-mail.
but I specifcally was asking WHEN and WHERE this CPC takes place because I want to know what I am getting if i win one of these satellites.

I was specifically wording it so that they wouldn't send me some sort of generic 'play in THESE sat's to win an exciting CPC package'.
I made sure that they knew that I was only curious about the city and the dates OF this 'fabulous' CPC package.

The full event will run over 5 days and feature many variations of poker.
Championship game has been set at $ 5000 CDN buy-in plus $250 registration fee. Why $ 5k CDN/? We want the world's best to come to our event and TJ made it clear that anything less would not be attractive for our favorites to come.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, if TJ says it then it MUST be true.

Re: Trying to figure out party satellites (rant)

I sent party an email too Bob, and i specifically said WHERE, and WHEN, and my earlier reply is what they sent me. I don't think they know where or when, which is kind of amusing. Apparently the first SAT is on Saturday, and has noone registered yet. I don't know how anyone could play in this having no clue where or when this is. Leave it to Party Poker and Canadians to run the most confusing tournament ever.(*Note, i'm Canadian, before other Canadians get offended, its a joke )

"Dear MicroBob,

Thank you for your recent inquiry to our Party Poker headquarters in Calcutta regarding satellites to our exicting CPC.
The CPC, (Caribbean/Canadian Poker Classic), will be held November 10th (possibly) throught December 14 (maybe) in the lovely St. Martin/Calgary area. Be sure to bring your swimsuit/skiis and take advantage of all that the lovely Southern Carribean/Northern Rockies area has to offer.
Our simple and easy to understand sng satellites are offered 24 hours a day. Instead of poker, the winner of the satellite will be the person who knows what they are actually playing for. So sign up today, and we will see you in in St.Martin/Calgary! in late November or possibly December!"

Why would Cloutier give a [censored]? He's not even Canadian.

I thought he was because of his French surname and his CFL career, but then I hear he's from Cali.

Get Negreanu or something: An American spokesman for a Canadian event is a joke when we have our own homegrown talent.

Looks like Party updated their page with info on this and dates.

Jan 29-Feb 4, 2006. And yes, amazingly, the CANADIAN championships are indeed in the BAHAMAS, lol.

This makes no sense..

Have you ever dreamt about spending winter on a Caribbean island? Now you can, and get rich and famous in the process. How about a lovely trip to the Bahamas this winter? In between lazing in the sun and enjoying all the benefits of a 5* resort, you could also pick up your share of the estimated $2,000,000 prize pool.

Event Details:

Canadian Poker Championships (CPC)
Nassau, Bahamas
January, 29 - February, 04 2006
Our CPC Package includes:

$5,000 Buy-in to the Canadian Poker Championships
6 nights in the Atlantis Resort, Nassau
$1,100 spending money

The event will be televised, so get your camera face ready!

Re: Trying to figure out party satellites (rant)

Yeah....they sent me an e-mail (and also said that my comments about how difficult it was to figure stuff out on their site would be forwarded to their management team).
And I also saw the link on their site now.

I am not understanding why they are being called the Canadian championships if they are taking place in the Bahamas.
Are they just going to invite a bunch of Canadians to play as well?
It sure doesn't appear that you actually have to BE Canadian to play?

Strangely, I've noticed a trend with other major tournaments.
the Scandanvian Open, for example, takes place in a Scandanvian country.
the Aussie Millions takes place in australia.
The USPC is in the U.S.

Do you see a pattern here?

Why is something called 'The canadian poker championships' taking place in the Bahamas?

Looks like Idrinkcoors' post about 'bring your surfboard and/or snow-skiis' actually wasn't too far off.

MicroBob 10-25-2005 10:27 PM

Re: Trying to figure out party satellites (rant)

I also have my suspicions that the $5k buy-in might be in Canadian dollars...so we need to find out for sure.

I would be interested in this as long as I was sure that I am getting full value for my entry.
If they give away a $5k Canadian-dollar entry for every $5k in American dollars that they take in then it is a horrible rip-off.

Initially it was the Cat Island Poker Championship (which is an island in the Bahamas). After establishing the Cat Island Poker Championship (thereafter shortened to the CPC) the island backed out from hosting the event. Air and ship transportation as well as accomadations had already been arranged and Party Poker had to scramble to find a sponsorship country that begins with a C. And as they say "The rest is history". Well actually it will be the future but you know what I mean.

Re: Trying to figure out party satellites (rant)

I can't tell whether you're joking or not.

I would think it wouldn't be too hard to just change the name of the event to the 'Bahamas Championship' or whatever title they wanted.

this new thing actually works out decently for me...because the dates for the PokerStars Atlantis event aren't as good for me.
but these dates for the Party one would fit into my plans a bit better.

I've heard of this tournament. You get all of the Molson/Red Strip you can drink, and after a bust out, the dealer says,

"Ya mon, take off eh?"

I'll stop now.
