Bad luck or bad play?

Haven't posted hands for a while, so thought I'd ask about these two

did I play badly (not protect my hand) or was I just unlucky?

Party Poker 2/4 Hold'em (8 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is BB with 5[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, 3 folds, Button calls, SB completes, Hero checks.

Flop: (4 SB) 2[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB bets, Hero calls, UTG+1 calls, Button folds.
Thought I'd let the pot build and bang the turn assuming at least one opponent has a Q, taking a chance on no turn [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

Turn: (3.50 BB) T[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, UTG+1 raises, SB folds, Hero 3-bets, UTG+1 caps, Hero calls.

River: (11.50 BB) A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
Hero bets, UTG+1 raises, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 15.50 BB

Results in white below:
Hero has 5c 5h (three of a kind, fives).
UTG+1 has Ah As (three of a kind, aces).
Outcome: UTG+1 wins 15.50 BB.

Re: Bad luck or bad play?

Don't post bad beats. Your play in hand 2 sucks.

Hand 1: I don't mind the smooth call on the flop with the pot being small. The rest looks fine.

Hand 2: You can't check this flop. It easily could have got checked through.

You opponents got very lucky on the river in both hands. That's the breaks.

Re: Bad luck or bad play?

There's nothing you can do differently in Hand 1 that would make a difference; AA isn't going anywhere on this board.

Hand 2 is dreadful. You have the field perfectly positioned for a c/r on the flop and turn, and yet you just call every time (even though anyone with a high diamond is likely calling no matter how many bets you put in). Only when the board pairs & it becomes more likely (though still not very likely) that you're behind do you come to life. The only street I agree with here is preflop.

it wasn't my intent to post bad beats.... sorry

i didn't really think there was anything i could do in hand 1,
but i can see how hand 2 was poorly played.... thanks

Re: Bad luck or bad play?

But if it makes you feel better, your wrongfully passive play in hand 2 probably saved you some cash, since he is not folding that hand if he has half a brain.

Re: Bad luck or bad play?

Hand #1 is ok, although I like a flop raise given the two spades. Nothing you can do about someone misplaying AA like this. Villan got sooooo lucky on the river.

Hand#2 - Anyone with a lone A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] could beat you if you let them draw, so raising the flop is a definite consideration. One thing I am very sure about - please raise the turn! You're missing a big betting opportunity there as you will still be able to bet out on the river and get called by anyone still around after the turn. The river card is just an lucky one for you. It's a shame you held all your aggression in for it UTG's preflop call with that hand is horrible BTW

Both hands are cases of getting sucked on of course ...
