Getting A Second Job

So the holidays are also the time of year for me to look at my budget and say "holy [censored] am I broke!". I hate the [censored] holidays.

I think it's time to get a second job to pay for some of this stuff and hopefully pay off some debt. What I don't have is any idea of what I can do.

Here's the scoop: I have a decent 8-5 job. I'm a professional in a small suburb. I have an education (an MBA which is doing me a [censored] lot of good) but no special skills. I'm good on the phone, okay at sales even though I don't enjoy it. I'm not handsome enough to work at Abercrombie and [censored] the female help. I'm single, so I have "free time".

I want to find something I can make $1,000 / month doing. Playing the game which must not be named is not an option, since I have neither the bankroll nor the skills to make enough.

Hey, OOT, got any ideas for what I can do for my second job?

Yeah, stripping and manwhoring is definitely not going to work. If I were female, judging from what's out there on Craigslist, I might have a shot. But I'm not and there just isn't the demand for what I've got to offer.

Retail has some possibilities, although most retail jobs i've worked in the past paid almost nothing.

Some ideas I have so far --
Computer tech support/help desk
Teach an online university class (won't be enough $)
Freelance writing
Security

Work some evenings as a waiter. You'll make good loot, especially on weekends if the restaurant is busy.

Damn, it sucks to be you.

Someday, being an [censored] is going to be bite me in the ass. I'll be sure to post about it in OOT.

Bartend / wait tables. You'll make more money than pretty much anything else, plus you'll get laid regardless of how dorky or lame you may be. Apply at a lot of places and be willing to start low and work your way up. Someone will have space for you.

If you're willing to do overnight, you could probably find a job that doesn't require you do actually do anything most of the time and allows you sit there and read, watch DVDs, and surf the internet.

I used to deliver for a chinese food restaurant on Friday & Saturday nights, from 5:30 - 9:30. Easily made $80 - $100 each night. That's pretty close to the $$$ you're looking for. Very good stress/cash ratio, and it didn't interfere with weekend party time. [img]/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]

Sorry to be Vince Lombardi, but this simply means you don't have the desire. $1000/month is easy, assuming you have enough money to play $1/2 or do cheap casinos bonuses. this is way better than any $10/hour 2nd job you'll pick

This is a better option than you think. There's a place around here that pays $100 a rub so long as your sperm count is high enough, and you can do it as often as you want. One of my friends does it, and is going on a streak of 17 straight days.

Take home? That's a pretty decent chunk of change for a parttime job. Assuming that you can get $10/hour doing menial work, that's 100 hours a month, or 25 hours a week. That's a [poop]load of crap work for the Man.

I suggest you start living below your means, and take some of those 25 hours a week to improve your current position into a higher paying job. Or use them to become a better [unmentionable] player [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] You can make 10/hour at Absolute[unmentionable] on bonus alone.

Using that time of yours to do retail or whatever is just a waste of your talent and skills.

Is there a Dillards near you? They pay $10/hr and some depts pay commission. They will treat you like [censored] but if you just want something for a few months you can do that, slack off when you want then bail when they start giving you the business.

All good thoughts in your post, but the above is the fundamental problem. I took a large pay cut a couple years ago to change jobs and I didn't downsize my lifestyle enough. Not even close to enough.

I've looked at my budget, figured out what can be cut, but unless I want to start defaulting on stuff, living below my means isn't going to happen unless my income goes up.

Which means second job PLUS figuring out how to make more money at job A.

In my spare time, I will probably try and take the game which must not be mentioned more seriously, but if I keep withdrawing what I make each month to chip away at the debt, I'm going to playing $1/$2 (at best) forever.

Thanks for the thoughtful post, and to those others who had decent ideas. And whoever said it (Metetron?), yeah it does indeed suck to be me.

If you are making a living at sales and you don't enjoy it, you're [censored]. Better get out now. You will never excel at it, so you're wasting your time. Do some hard thinking about what you want to make your living doing.
