Do you need to know full ring to play 6-max?

Situation:

I have a friend who has played NL HU matches a ton. For arguements sake they understand poker concepts and theories. They want to get into Limit but find full boring, and like the idea of 6max better.

Without any limit experience do you think it is bad to just hop into and learn 6-max with no full ring experience? Essentially they would be learning limit poker and gaining experience which they need no matter what, but how much is lost at not playing full ring. They have the bankroll to take a $1000 hit at 1-2 6max this is strictly about learning. He is going to take his limit learning lumps regardless.

The major question is: If you want to specialize in 6-max and your "dream is to work up to 10-20" do you ever need to set foot in full ring?

I don't see why you would need full table experience to play Shorthanded. If someone already knows most of the basics of poker and has the BR to play, then they should be fine starting in that game. (Coming from a HU background certainly can't hurt)

I can play full ring now, but I also got to 10/20 playing purely 6-max. Playing shorthanded probably accelerates the learning process if anything.

thanks...I agree with you guys.

The person in question said he posted this same question awhile back and got the opposite response. I didn't see the big deal in learning full, if you dont want to play it but wasnt sure if you are missing anything to apply to 6-max.

Your question is a bit strange because playing SH is all about understanding how to adapt to different playing styles and adapt when the number of players change. If u are good at going from, lets say, HU to 4 handed, or from playing a tightpassive to play a looseaggressive, u will of course have no problem going from 6 to 9-10 players.

If u cant win $ at 10/20 full u will not be one of the better players at 10/20SH. If this guy is good at NL HU he will basically have to learn all the starting hand requirements and understand that u cant raise the loose players away. After a while he will kill the $1/2 tables.

And yes, SH is much more fun the full ring game. I sometimes sit down at a 15/30 full but I always leave after a few minutes, extremly boored.

Party should have more 15/30 6-max.

Lol, I know what you mean. While I don't sit in the 15 game, I just hate sitting in a full game and folding KTo. I get two cards in a SH game and immediately debate wether to raise, fold, call. THat doesn't happen in a full game.
