Skateboard Jumping Question

http://home.datacomm.ch/chrom/Bild.d...do-155-222.gif

I was watching some sports channel where they featured teenagers jumping over fire hydrants, big upright trash cans, & up onto hand railings without using a ramp of any kind to help them get air.

Question: How do they get the board to travel up with them without a strap on their foot (like snowboarders), or without using their hand to grab and pull the board up with them?

I was watching some sports channel where they featured teenagers bouncing basketballs without using anything of any kind to help them get them into the air.

Question: How do they get the ball to travel up with them without a strap on their hand, or without using their other hand to grab and pull the ball up with them?

The dribbling of a basketball is usually initiated by somebody first picking up the ball with both hands. Then of course the invisible spirits take over.

Anyone with a bit of coordination can do it without picking it up like this.

what happens when you step on a board outside of the wheel base? It goes flying up. Now use your other foot to level it off again. It's not easy, i can't do it, but the physics behind it make sense.

Yeah, but that takes a bunch of smaller dribbles to to get it going, where the skateboarders don't have to do that. Skateboarders don't only use the inertia created by their own weight, which is exactly what's implied with the basketball analogy. Skateboarders use gripping tape to help pull the board up with them. Before gripping tape was around, you'd typically see riders using one hand to "grip and pull the board up."

Here's an example of how the board's upward mobility is being assisted by the rider's front foot held in place by gripping tape: (notice how the foot is rolled over on it's side for a better grip)
