SSH pre flop strategy question

the pre flop chart (tight game)on page 80 of SSH says you can play Axs from mid position if there is no raise in front. The "Notes About the Recommendations" section that follows says that if you are first in from mid position you should probably fold small pocket pairs or suited connectors (unless a raise is warranted). It doesn't specifically mention AXs hands.

My question is, in general, is there a specific number of people you want/need to see in the hand before its ok to limp with these speculative hands like small pairs, AXs, and 98s type hands. I am pretty sure that other 2+2 books have said these hands are good if you have a lot of opponents but not if you don't.

Are we able to play these hands without 3 or 4 players already in because we assume they will come in behind us? Just trying to clear it up in my mind. thanks.

btw, great book i am learning a lot.
