To tip or not to tip

If one is serious about making money, should you tip at all? It's the dealers job to deal where as a waitress makes chump change per hour and is doing you a service. The dealer just deals cards and he doesn't tip back if you get sucked out on a good hand. Tipping can add up over a year so I'm thinking don't tip'em.

Because you appear clueless I'll take a shot at explaining why this is super dumb.

Dealers provide a service just like the wait staff and they are not making a ton of money because they are expected to be getting tips. So not tipping them because you think they make a living wage is super dumb.

If you are morally opposed to tipping, knock yourself out, save yourself a couple of bucks here and there, but don't try to justify it by saying the dealers job is that much different than any other service employee.

Re: To tip or not to tip

I was actually reading an article about tipping earlier. Dealers are relying on those tips as part of their normal income. It said that if dealers weren't receiving tips on a normal basis, the house would probably have to increase the rake to give dealers a better hourly rate. Also, nobody wants to pay higher rakes.

Dealers are everyday Joe's just trying to scrape out a living, I think we can all afford to toss them an occasional chip or 2.

Sure it's OK not to tip, just play on the internet.

I know how you all feel about tipping. It would be nice if the tips came from the rake instead of the pots.

The dealer just deals cards

Actually a good dealer can keep the game moving (meaning more hands per hour), keep new players in the loop so they enjoy the game (but still spew chips), and "manage" the table making the experience more enjoyable for the casual player ... you know the one that you take the pots from who keeps playing cause he's having fun even though he's down 100BB for the night. To me that's worth a few chips on every pot I win.

It's fascinating to see what a large number of people are concerned about this topic.

I suspect that many people resent having to tip but there are also feelings of stingyness and/or guilt coming into play.

Re: To tip or not to tip

I loathe poker rooms though where dealers don't keep their tips. I will tip always if the dealers pocket tips but in some areas where the tip goes to a community pool I am reluctant to tip nearly as much or as often.
My general experience has been that these dealers are slower and less good for the game since they have no reason to deal quickly and well since they can ride on the shirt tails of other dealers.
This is even worse if they share tips with other areas like Blackjack etc.

We're too far into 2005 for this to be even close to the dumbest statement of the year, but I would like to nominate it for dumbest of the week.

Re: To tip or not to tip

I have similar opinions to PokerEnthusiast. I tip, but not often. And theres always lots of bad dealers wherever I seem to play, and whenever they f something up I stop tipping. Has to be good service. I think the casino should pay the dealers a little more (without raising the rake, I think the casino pockets way too much because of greed) and I also dont think the dealers deserve to make 30+$ an hour for their job that they currently do. If all the sharks/experienced players stopped tipping the fish still would and the dealer would still make 15$ an hour prolly, more than enough for a job that I could probably do as well.

Just my opinion.

What happened to no more tipping threads? I just did a quick search for tipping and came up with more info than I ever needed.

Do you tip waitresses often? As to not tipping a dealer when the f something up, what do you do when you get an exceptional dealer? (I'll hit him with a chip or two at the end of the shift, no matter how I'm doing -- and to be honest, I do this far more frequently than stiffing, which I've done maybe twice).

Would you even recognize an exceptional dealer?

Re: To tip or not to tip

I never tip on the first pot that I get from a dealer. But then after that I will. If it's a small pot I won't. When a new dealer comes in, I won't tip on the first pot won...get the idea?

By small, I mean, a few chips.

Re: To tip or not to tip

I agree. I don't tip nobody for nothing, not never, no way no how. Not dealers, not waitresses, not taxi drivers, not hair stylists, not porters, not parking attendants, not nobody never.

Because I'm serious about making money.

Dealers make minimum wage+tips. Good dealers make deal faster, move the game faster and make more money. If you are a good player, having good dealers is +EV for you, as the game will move along better.

It's amazing that the same tired thread can still get 20-odd posts. I guess some of us, me included (since I'm posting on this one), have too much free time.

I've contributed my only idea to cut down on these stupid threads, but consensus is plainly that people would rather rewrite the same arguments each time rather than archive them somewhere semi-stable and refer back to them. So knock yourselves out, but wake me up when there's a new topic of conversation.
