Project Classic Rock
project classic rock: I'm beginning a classic rock collection. if you can help me catalouge albums, year by year, drinks await you at the bar. [I'm leaning toward beginning after the Elvis years.]
or looking for any good message boards that could help me undertake this project. |
Re: Project Classic Rock
If you truly have no knowledge of classic rock, here's your best bet. Stay up late and wait for an infomercial that sell's a classic rock anthology. Then use the names on the CD's to start buying new stuff.
|
Re: Project Classic Rock
no please do not do that!
|
Re: Project Classic Rock
i'm not buying all the pop hits, althought many were good.
|
Re: Project Classic Rock
I didn't say those TV collections were any good. But you seem to need a starting point.
|
Re: Project Classic Rock
What exactly are you looking for? Names of good classic rock albums that you should have?

Kashmir is not an album. That's a fairly standard list though for a CR rookie. Some good basic stuff there.

Re: Project Classic Rock
I was complimenting the list in saying it was standard. I wasn't complaining about it.

Re: Project Classic Rock
First off, thanks !
I'm interested in albums, but in putting together the classic rock collection, my interest also is partly in reconstrucing the 60s, 70s in a chronological fashion. Music from the early 60s, if not by year, etc. I'm also trying to decide if I should buy the vinyls or simply purchase the cds =\ |

Re: Project Classic Rock
As far as anthologies go, Celebrate - The Three Dog Night Story, 1965-1975.
|
Re: Project Classic Rock
Don't forget:
Lynyrd Skynyrd Deep Purple Queen Warren Zevon Who Tom Petty ACDC Rush |
Re: Project Classic Rock
"Locomotive Breath" rocks hard.
|
Re: Project Classic Rock
If you dig Zep, go ahead and buy the other albums, they are all quality.
No one mentioned yet... Cream Yardbirds Allman Brothers Creedence Clearwater Revival Paul Butterfield Blues Band (maybe) Chuck Berry (not really classic rock, but it's classic rock 'n' roll, if ya know what I mean) You'd probably like Steve Miller Band, I don't really care for them anymore. I thought they were cool when I was in High school. |

The Rolling Stones--Exile on Main Street [/ QUOTE ] Best. Album. Ever. (The Clash's London Calling is a close second.) |
Re: Project Classic Rock
Wish You Were Here is a great album. It, along with DSotM and The Final Cut are my 3 favorite Floyd albums.

Re: Project Classic Rock
alright, I'm getting a good idea of what I need to puchase =]
|
Re: Project Classic Rock
Bob Seger's stuff is fantastic.
|
Re: Project Classic Rock
Velvet Underground is also pretty much obligatory. If you are willing to spring for the 5cd box set, you can get all of their released works plus a ton of other takes. If not, just get Peel Slowly and See and Loaded.

I especially want stuff along the lines of the beatles, zeppeling, doors, stones, hendrix I love it all |

Re: Project Classic Rock
If I may add a few records.
This is a list of cd's you should own and it is by no means complete. Year of release in () I know, I know, I'm a child of the MTV generation (...and a little biased at some points). Any Dylan, Beatles and Stones 1966-1970 The Doors - Strange Days (1967) The Kinks - Something Else By The Kinks (1967) The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967) Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969) Led Zeppelin - Fourth Album (1971) (The one with Stairway To Heaven, I don't know the title. catalogue number: 7567-82638-2) Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) Neil Young - On The Beach (1974) Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run (1975) Van Halen - Van Halen (1978) Van Halen - Van Halen II (1979) AC/DC - Back In Black (1980) Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (1985) Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction (1987) Nirvana - Nevermind (1991) R.E.M. - Automatic For The People (1991, or is it 1992? don't remember) Oasis - Definitely Maybe (1994) Oasis - What's The Story Morning Glory (1995) Def Leppard - Hysteria (1987) - I don't know how I feel about adding this one to the list. For sales figures I think. Very commercial. Impossible to skip if you want to include 80's material. As for cd vs. lp I say go for cd's. Some have been released with bonus tracks. Might be worth it. Of course lp's look cooler on the shelf. Phew, I put some work in this list. Please tell me you are going to buy some of it. |

How could classic rock start AFTER the Elvis years? [/ QUOTE ] I don't like Elvis, I think he's pop. He's pop before it became commercialised. keller- your time won't go wasted. My list of vinyls is going to cost me at least $1000.00 but that's okay =] |
