Is Paul Magriel\'s fame a joke?

Seriously. Is there any way he is in the black on major tournaments?.

He's famous because he's one of the best and most innovative backgammon players ever. I don't think anyone thinks he's really a top notch pro poker player.

I seem to recall reading that Paul Magriel was one of the Mayfair guys in the late 80s when it was a hot spot for backgammon, that he was a mentor to Seidel and others.

look at this guy , He won the Legends of Poker in the first WPT season. Poor guy, probably another degenerate gambler who can't handle his finances. Playing 75 dollar tournaments and everything, sad. I bet though all the face twitching he does gives away tells galore to the good players.

It doesn't really matter too much at all if he is in the black in major tournaments. Magriel is one of, if not the best backgammon player ever. His book "Backgammon" is to the backgammon world what Super/System is to poker. He has made serioius cash before becoming a poker pro, and his time in poker is simply a quest to conquer another game involving a mix of skill and luck.

He did not quit. But he does not play like someone who won a few hundred grand. He went on to finish school. He still plays in Los Angeles card clubs. But at levels equivalent to what he might be able to afford had he not won the money. Smart kid if you ask me.

Bright enough to recognize that he got lucky, and is not good enough(yet) to consistently win at that level.

As it refers to poker? He's nothing really special as of yet, if I was seated with him at a table, I'm not gonna be estatic about it, he's far from a donkey at nl hold 'em.. his math skills seem to be a crutch he leans on quite a bit, but said math skills are very very strong.

As it refers to backgammon, Magriel is the man.

Damn, man. I used to have that exact same picture as my avatar.

Now, I have a better one.

But it might be time for another change.

i used to talk to danny every now and then. he was a nice guy and gave me a ride from the airport once too. bought some of my action in the legends main event.

i don't think he confused his abilities with that of david pham and gus hansen. i think he feels his game is strong and is a good learner, but i don't think he ever intended to play on the circuit full time. he went to law school and finished that up, and i haven't talked to him since he got into that.

Magriel has been one of the top backgammon players in the world for decades. I doubt you have the brain power to even approach his level of skill at that game.

The reason so many powerhouse backgammon players turn to poker, many with great success? Bigger money at a game that is easier to master.

When I saw the title of this thread, I was going to type the exact same thing. This is the guy who eliminated Hellmuth at the 2005 WSOP. When his pp7 met Phil's AQ, Magriel says in his BEST lisp ... "Off to the rayshesh!" My g/f, who doesn't like watching poker on TV, became an instant fan.

I have no idea what fault you could find with my post. Particularly since another poster went on to post very similiar points.

Re: Is Paul Magriel\'s fame a joke?

When I first moved to Vegas a couple years back I was surprised to see Paul in the Horseshoe's 2:00PM $110 buy-in tourney. This was right after his WPT appearance. I did not know much about the tournament poker scene in Vegas at the time but was still kind of surprised to see him play at what is pretty much a tournament for tourists and low limit locals.

I was even more surprised last night when I saw him as Isabelle Mercier's so-called coach. I can't imagine with the access she has to so many professionals that she would have him as a coach. But, maybe he is better at explaining theory than in applying it to his own game.
