Backpacking/cheap year of travel around Europe.

Been very interested in travelling around Europe for a year or so. I have a fair amount of money so that's not a huge problem, but I'd prefer to keep it simple, myself and a friend or two basically travelling around as cheap as possible staying in hostiles or whatever.

Anyone have any experience with this? I don't even know where to start really or how to formulate a plan. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

ultra cheap train travel

This seems to be quite cool for travelling through Europe. I know some friends who did it and where quite content. I plan on doing this in around 1 year, however it's much easier for me because I already am in Europe

Lonely Planet is much more geared to solo/very cheap travel.

Let's Go is written by Harvard kids with a bit more money. Let's Go certainly doesn't assume you have $150/day to spend, but it also gives you some decent restaurant reco's for when you want to splurge.

Pretty much throughout Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden), if you go to the tourist office in any town, they'll find a local family for you to stay with for a pretty cheap price. Except for the member of the Danish Nazi Party we got stuck with in Copenhagen, it was an interesting time. I highly recommend traveling the Norwegian coast by train, bus, ferry. Make it to the Lofoten Islands if you can in summer, you can stay in the fishing huts for like $5 a night. (They're actually more like a spartan lodge.)

For GB, you can often stay on farms or in pubs in the rural areas.

One essential book you'll want to get will be a Thomas Cook European Timetable. Invaluable for finding out how to get anywhere by train.

I also like Let's Go and Lonely Planet.

My only advice is that it is definately NOT OK to openly smoke hash in German clubs.
