Chop/chop?
 

Private J.'s new awesome story about the YID hits unpleasantly close to home for me in several areas…for one, I am a huge idiot fan of showing my “bluffs” that are actually the best hand. It’s a disease, like herpes.

But the biggest needle was the chopping comment. What do y’all think of a player who says they NEVER chop from the SB or BB? Is it a douchey thing to do? It is discourteous? Is it bad for the table atmosphere?

I know that it’s somewhat unprofitable, but that’s not that big a deal to me…I play mostly NL so those blind hands can get serious quick…but I don’t chop in limit either. (I just like to see flops, because: I am a fool.) I’m mainly interested in what y’all think about a player who is otherwise very friendly who says he won’t chop. I know I’m not out to make friends, but, I don’t want players I respect thinking I’m a YID (though I am, really) and I don’t want fishy fish getting disgruntled.

The one guaranteed positive aspect is that it has caused some ancient rocky nits to leave my table. So that’s good at least…

Personally, I chop because it tends to keep people sociable, and it often makes sense if there is a jackpot drop.

But I can understand wanting to play the hand, so I have no problem with people who don't chop, as long as they are consistent.

I don't chop and its not ever been a problem for me. I just tell the guy next to me that I always look at my cards immediately and don't want to have to put myself in a position to make a hard decision. People have always been cool about it. I think as long as you don't come off like an ass nobody has a problem with not chopping.

I don't chop in time collection games.

But as I've posted before, playing hands in the blinds out when the drop is $1 if you fold, $5 if you play, is just plain retarded.

Even my maniac-ness must admit to that.
As a self-hijack, they really are shooting themselves in the foot with this rule, aren't they? More chopping + tentative play around the button = fewer flops = less rake. Why do they do this? Why not just straight % as in AC? I can't see a justification.

AC is so wonderful. Ahhhh, sweet Boardwalk Beauty...

California law allows "drops" not rake (taking a percentage of the pot). Thus, the house is paid each time it performs the service of dealing a flop ($4) or $1 for dealing cards when no flop results. I could be totally wrong, but this is how I think it works.

If the house is going to take a rake on the flop, I chop.

If someone prefers not to, that's cool, it's their right to play the hand.

Anyway, leads to a funny story, a while ago. It's late at night at a $2-4 table I'm sitting BB and get dealt KK. It gets folded around to SB, who just sat down a few hands ago and is probably a bit drunk. I ask him whether he wants to chop.

The guy says -- "I know you have a crappy hand or you wouldn't have offered, so why should I chop" and raises me.

Anyway, to make a long story short -- Flop comes down K66. SB ultimately shows 6-4, but since I'm playing the nuts, and he refuses to believe I really have anything, this is MANY chips later.

Now, the fun starts -- I flip over my kings, and the jerk goes absolutely ballistic -- calls me a cheater, saying that I was angle shooting, every name in the book, etc. Finally, the dealer calls over the floor, who looks at me and I say "I always offer to chop, whether it's 2-7 or AA" The floor then goes to sb and says that if he can't control his language, he'll be asked to leave the casino.

SB Picks up his chips, says FU to the floor and storms out.

Floor and I just smile and shrug.

i dont care if people chop or not - as long as they are consistent. I usually chop just because thats usually what the table does so i keep it that way
