another definition needed

when referring to the stakes of a NL game what does "$25NL" or whatever number mean ($400NL etc.) Is that the cap on the buy in for the table?

You answered your own question

It is worth knowing that different sites have different blind structures for apparently the same limit, so just because something says "Do this at the $25NL on siteA" it doesn't always hold true that you should do it at siteB with different sized blinds.

I too wonder about what "$25NL" means, and I agree with OP that a definition is actually needed. His conjecture was this is the maximum buy-in amount, as opposed to the minimum buy-in amount. So which is it? You make the point that $25NL might mean different blind structuring on different internet poker sites, suggesting nomenclature of $25NL is a somewhat deficient description of a game! Would you kindly extend your remarks?

NL just refers to the max-buyin.

You'll need to go to the site to know what the blind structure is. But at party the blind structure at the 25NL tables is .10/.25, meaning you can buyin for 100 BBs.

$25 NL means you can't buyin for more than $25, or top up your stack to more than $25 at any one time.
Of course, you may win a pot that takes you over $25. That is fine.

Because so many people play with the same (.1/.25) blind structure, it is rarely a problem to describe, but there are places with different blind structures so it is far from a perfect description.

There is usually a minimum buyin of around $5 for a $25 game.
