Why?????

First of all while this post is inspired by a bad beat I do not intend to whine about it, there is enough of that on the boards and I do not in any way mean to contribute to it. So if you do feel that this is a meaningless rant and you need to flame me don't..... If you want to flame someone for writing stupid post try here or here . That being said I will get on with my story.....

Me and mis amigos play semi-reguarly in home touries, we've been doing so for about 1 1/2 to 2 years. In that time we've gone from knowing absolutly nothing about the strategy of the game to various levels of skill. Out of the 10 to 12 of us that play I am the only one to study the game and try to win consistantly. The more I've studdied the thighter and/or better I've become. Everyone has picked up on that and often comment about it when I'm in a hand, make a big re-raise, etc. but it seems like they just don't get it. Take for example this hand from last thursday.

3- handed home tourny (blinds @ 10-20)
Preflop: Hero on button with A [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]
Hero raises to 200 , sb calls, bb calls

Flop: (600 in pot) A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 2 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]
sb checks, bb checks, Hero bets 200 , sb calls, bb folds.

Turn: (1000 in pot) 7 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]
sb checks, hero bets 400 , sb raises hero all in , hero calls.

sb show 7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

River: 4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]
sb makes two pair to take the pot and knock me out.

What I don't understand is why do they make these kinds of calls against me? I raised 10xBB and I get called by a 7,4o? Then when an ace hits on the flop I bet again, what did they think I had dueces???

Any ideas are welcome I am hoping that someone will give me somekind of clue as to why these guys don't reaspect my raises and call me with trash hands.

They're trying to have fun, and judging by that pot, it worked in that case.

They cheated you I tells ya!

But seriously, it seems to me that they really dont give a crap and are just trying to have fun. Since you are learning the game and taking it seriously they just want to try and outdraw you because they know you will be pissed and they can get a good laugh from it. Thats pretty much it, just play your game and take advantage of the fact that they want to bad beat you, over bet stuff and make them pay way more than they would otherwise, you got a free ride, they want to suckout so let them do it for all their chips.

Beleive it or not some people have different reasons for playing poker than you do. To have fun maybe, or just to gamble, its a rush to people even if it baffles most players on here why people would do such things.

You're playing tight in this game?

He did it so he can knock you out, accumulate chips, and win the tournament.

It would sound a lot less like a bad beat whine post if there wasn't a bad beat involved. Have they never made a crazy play against you that you won?

Re: Why?????

1) Did you steal blinds a lot?
2) Did you bluff and show?
3) Was the game loose?
4) Were the other players any good?
5) Are you known to be tight/aggressive?

I don't know how your play and that of the blinds was before this hand. But it could be that the SB and BB thought you were stealing from the button and they both called. The fact that you bet it when the Ace hit may have not sent out warning bells in their minds since you probably would have made a bet even without an Ace in your hand since you raise PF.

Once the 7 hits the SB (in his mind) was going to put you to the test by check raising all-in representing the Ace or maybe thinking he might have the best hand.

Be careful about putting too much stock on your image. Even though you are known to be a tight player many players may think you are stealing, bluffing because of your image. Or they may not notice at all that you have been sitting on your hands for the last 20 minutes.

This sentence alone, tells me you suck at poker. Do you see why?

Re: Why?????

You don't want them to make those calls? Sure, you'll say of course you want the calls because that's what you'd expect everyone to want hear you say. But do you really believe you want them to call with long odds?

It's a home tourney and people are there to have fun. Don't take their play so seriously.

Want an answer? Why do people play craps (betting on the prop bets in the middle) or roulette? To many , poker isn't really that much different. Do casinos wonder why people consistently play pit games where the odds are heavily stacked against them?

Who cares? Roll with it. The law of large numbers is on your side.
