Tony Dungy\'s son found dead in Florida

This isn't really sporting events, but I'm posting it here b/c it is news from the sporting event world, and unfortunately will have some affect on the sporting world.

Many condolences; what a tragedy to lose an 18 year old son.

It's a bit macabre, but I think it's particularly helpful at this point that they lost last week's game, since I think there will be less pressure on Dungy to get back immediately, and hopefully less crazy intense media coverage, though I think I'm being unrealistic on that last one. Being in the public sphere and having to deal with such a thing just seems really awful.

Damn. That's a sad way to spend the holidays. Parents shouldn't have to see their children die. I offer my condolences as well.

Very tragic, I just hope Dungy doesn't feel obliged to return back to the team immedeatley because of their success this season.

Jesus.

Man, I guess that kid took the first Colts loss of the season pretty badly.

But seriously... that's just awful. How can Dungy even coach in the playoffs? This kind of thing must lurk in your brain for so long that you can't concentrate on anything. I don't see him being able to fully coach smoothly until next season at the earliest.

Re: Tony Dungy\'s son found dead in Florida

Those were my thoughts as well. I mean, I don't have kids, but I imagine I would be almost immobile for a while. And certainly an emotional cripple.

Luckily for the Colts (I guess) is that they have a good staff of assistants, Peyton Manning, and if they weren't sufficiently motivated before, they damn sure better be now.

Yowzah, wonder if this has anything to do with "Dad's always busy...never has time for me but always has time for Peyton, Edge, Marvin...etc.."?

He didn't seem to flaunt the fact that he was Tony Dungy's son. Maybe he was ashamed?

I'm not a professional, but I think it's more likely there were self-confidence/ego problems, due to his highly succesfull father (especially this year).

there are some posters in the Psych. forum who could probably discuss this intelligently.

I hope someday something terrible happens to you in a very public way so that you can be critiqued by someone with no personal knowledge of your situation and no background that would qualify them to make such statements.

I don't know much about this type of thing, but if there was no note found and they don't know the cause of death, how can they possibly assume its a suicide? It would seem to me like you wouldn't want to go around saying it was a suicide unless you were 100% sure.

Makes you think again about what's important. Last week we were wondering if the team could go 16-0. Now it seems completely unimportant.

as others have said, my thoughts and prayers go out to Tony Dungy and his family ...

i hate to be macabre but am i the only one who finds details around James Dungy's death a little suspicious? his girlfriend leaves his apartment at 1am in the morning to go for a walk? then she returns in 10 minutes to find her boyfriend dead? how many women go out alone at 1am in the morning? a walk that lasts only 10 minutes? something doesn't quite add up here ...

Everything that I've read (both recently and from years ago) implied or stated that Dungy put his family ahead of football (as far as he could). No sleeping on the couch in his office, no 16-20 hour workdays, etc. So while he was gone a lot due to his job, he seemed much more involved in his family than almost any other coach (and more than most dads in general).

i'm thinking the same thing. also, how does someone quit breathing...and also have evidence which appears to be a suicide? it doesn't sound like a gunshot wound, or a hanging, it just doesn't make sense yet.

i'm guessing there is a lot left to this story...and probably not good. what a shame.

Terrible as this is, after watching how much they've covered this story, I wonder if the media would cover it as much if the team weren't in the spotlight as the top team in the NFL.

I seem to remember a Packer's coach's son killed himself about 2 years ago, and didn't recieve nearly as much publicity.
Though i think it being an assistant coach had something to do with it.

The Indianapolis star referenced that myspace page as legtit in an article yesterday, FWIW. Also, a fake myspace page would have gone up 2 days ago, not 2 weeks ago.

WOW.

end sarcasm.
