Chip Tricks Rant

OK...so you can shuffle your chips...you can do the pullover, the sweep, the finger flip, the thumb flip, the Johnny Chan, the Switch, The Pickover, The Bounce, and the Chip Roll. You can even do the Twirl, and the friggin' Knuckle Roll. Great. Now leave it off the tables.
Now, if you want to show your friends at home and amaze your family, fine. But why do you insist on pulling these out at the casino? All you can ever hear now at the table is people shuffling their chips. Its annoying and its unnecessary. Its a damn poker game, why are you bouncing your chips from one hand to another or twirling them in your hand while you sit there for 3 minutes and(apparently) ponder calling that 5 dollar bet? Just fold you SOB. Or call, or raise. Dont play it up..dont dramatize it..dont keep us in suspense. Just do it.
Maybe you'd like it if next time youre waiting on me to make a big decision in a pot against you, you look over and Ive decided to put together a model railroad while i think about it...Or maybe ill amaze you by (apparently) ripping a 20 dollar bill in pieces and it magically reappearing in my hand?
Bottom line...no need for the tricks...earn respect by playing well. Dont take more time making a decision than you need to. Just c/r/f. And when were done we can go to a bar and you can teach me how to do the damn Butterfly...

You mean there was a different sound before? This is all I remember ever hearing on a consistent basis.

See, the problem with your post is that you started your rant with chip shuffling, which everyone does, more as a nervous habit than anything else, when it seems like you really want to tear the heads off the more flamboyant chip tricks.

Is it possible that you are the one player at the table who can't chip shuffle, and are maybe a teensy bit jealous?

I knew that was coming...and I figured all the comments would be sarcastic. I guess I should change the name of the post to "Stop stalling, Hollywood". This is my main issue. Just act, dont sit there and take all day over small decisions. The chip tricks just seem to come out while someone stares you down doing tricks for 4 minutes over a 10 dollar decision.

If you are a winning player then you must realize that all these chip tricks and drama are bringing great customers to the game. Great customers who are paying a big edge for the pleasure of acting out their TV fantasy against you.

If you want to offer them a cold hard transactional experience stick to online poker.

How people handle their chips is one of the best "tells" in all the world.

How people stack chips when they bet, how often people shuffle, how people shuffle when they are in a hand/ have monster/ ect... ect... ect...

I say play on with those chips and chip tricks.

I usually don't do any tricks at the table except the chip shuffle, which in my mind, isen't really that much of a trick. I know other tricks but I rarely do them at the table while I play.

I think chip tricks only intimidate weak players and not your average to expert player.

Any thoughts.

That's actually quite a difficult trick to master, but I've done it. And I sometimes do it at the poker table. Why? I don't know. Just because. Not to impress anyone, that's for sure. No one is impressed.

Shuffling chips? Makes noise you say? Tough. Get some earplugs if it bothers you that much. I'll do what I feel like doing at the poker table with my chips.

Who knows? Maybe I stop shuffling when I have a monster or shuffle extra fast when I'm bluffing. At the limits I play, no one is paying attention anyway. You, however, the expert player you are, might be able to pick up a tell or two about a person's hand based on their shuffling technique at the moment. Or do you not look for these things?

Who cares anyway? Have you ever had a nervous wreck sitting right next to you who can't stop bouncing his friggin leg for 5 hours straight. Drives you batty. Or the fat ass 385 pound slob that hasn't showered for a week on your right.

There are many annoying things at a poker table and now, sir, you are one of them.

Re: Chip Tricks Rant

95% of the reason alot of "new" players play poker is because they can live out some trite fantasy of being a high stakes, ultra cool poker hustler.

Thus the sunglasses/hood/chip shuffling/staredowns at the 2/4 limit hold em table.

In other words they aren't playing for the poker or even to win money. It's like baseball fantasy camp, only with Poker.

Basically they are playing make-believe.... which is fine because players like this, however annoying, rarely play good poker.

actually, I'd be damn impressed with shuffled potato chips... they're not uniformly sized, and they're extra thin.

but then again, you'd be ruining them, so it'd probably just anger me more.

I shuffle chips b/c I have ADD and some OCD, and a lot of poker players have characteristics of these disorders which make them shuffle to calm the nervous system.

Personally I do chiptricks while i play to relax and for fun. I think chiptricks are a separate issue from going hollywood. While annoying that some players posture a lot when its clear what they will do I say let them have it. You'll be spending their money later that night anyway, so why not keep them coming back for more by keeping them happy.

In time you might come to like the sound of chips shuffling, for me its become something akin to the crashing of waves, soothing.

Also its good to keep busy, or at least look busy while observing the play of hands your not in. No point in playing live unless you make use of the inherent advantages of live play, of which I feel chiptricks are one.

I tend to shuffle chips constantly... Whether or not I am trying to make a big decision or not. Yeah, if you are playing limit and someone is taking an inordinate amount of time staring you down, shuffling chips, building chip castles, etc. instead of making a decision it is annoying.

i got a poker chip set for free so when i play online im shuffling chips at the same time. i do it because all the cool pro's do it, but i think it became a habit now.

Yes, I see your point. But funny thing... years ago when I left Vegas I recall being in the Bellagio poker room and for some reason I recall thinking... "Geez, I'm gonna miss that chip clatter sound."

LOL!

I guess it's just the sound of "action" to me.

Re: Chip Tricks Rant *** Totally***

if it's a 5-10 dollar decision in a limit game, just decide one way or the other.

a $150 decision on the turn or river in NL game... ok.

but in limit, either you have it or you don't and most "make em wait while you think" type bluffs don't work.

Ghazban 10-05-2005 05:35 PM

Re: Chip Tricks Rant

I've never seen anybody do chip tricks (other than shuffling, which doesn't really count) while making a decision... and I play mostly NL. People capable of doing chips tricks are usually also decent enough players that they don't need to take 20 minutes to figure out what they're going to do.
