Adjusting my play -- PP 2/4 to AC live 4/8
 

I'm going down to atlantic city tomorrow to play some poker in a casino for the first time... I plan on bringing 300 bucks and seeing what happens. How should I expect to adjust my play to maximize winnings? All I've played so far is PP 2/4

P.S. any other tips for a first time casino experience in AC? I've read most of the stickies, etc. in the B&M section

the borgata was my favorite room there. 4/8 live is usually even fishier than 2/4 PP. don't be afraid to limp in late position with good multiway hands...most flops go 5-7 handed. other than that general TAGishness is effective.

It should play similarly to pokerstars's .02-.04

If your a winner at 2/4 pp you will be way ahead of the game at 4/8 in AC.

Be prepared to feel like you're mucking EVERY hand and NEVER getting involved in a pot (this effect is going to be especially exaggerated if you multi-table online). If you're not concious of how slow a B&M game moves you can easily fall into the trap of playing too many hands in spots that you shouldn't. Going from 300 hands per hour to 30 hands per hour can make A LOT of silly junk start to look really appealing! [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

the borgata doesn't have 4/8, they have 6/12, which is also a great game. for 4/8 though, try the trop. you'll get a better run for your $300.

Look left before acting!!! I still remember the $8 I lost when, on the button, I bet the ragged river with my overpair KK and was nearly beat into the pot by a old man in the big blind who called the whole way with a flopped two pair (53o). If I had only looked left I would have seen him with chips in hand, eager to call!

This is a REALLY crucial point. A lot of good online players have a hard time playing their best game in live games because they can't deal with the fact they're playing 1/10 of the hands they are used to 4-tabling online. This leads them to play way too many hands and to try to make too many fancy moves to keep the entertainment value up.


A good thing I like to do is to play at limits significantly above my online limits. I play 3/6-5/10 and occassionally 10/20 online, but generally play 10/20-20/40 live. One of the reasons is that it makes me focus and play my A game.

You'll need to adjust for how passive live can be especially at lower limits. It takes some getting used to. Depending upon the player top 2 pair is not a raising hand for some. It makes it difficult to put people on hands if all they are doing is calling. Value bet like a madman, pump your draws with enough players in the pot, but be careful betting TPGK. Good luck.

There is a lot less random aggression in a typical live 4/8 game. If you have one pair and someone who looks like your grandmother raises you on the turn, you can often safely throw away your hand where in the same spot online you might be stuck calling down. Of course, sometimes you end up in a ram and jam game where people are raising and capping just for fun, and then you need to adjust accordingly.
