Tropicana AC a dump?

I'm staying at the Trop in a few days instead of my usual stay at the sweet, sweet Borg (basically because I wasn't up for the waits at the Borg this time and because for once the Trop was as cheap as teh Borg's poker rate) and, having read some really terrible reviews of the hotel/rooms on the internet (after I booked, cos that's the way I like to operate ), I'm wondering if I've made a big mistake. I realised that it wouldn't be as nice as the Borg, but some of the reviews make it sound like a real dump. I'm staying in the old bit, not the Havana tower, which is apparently particularly grim.
What should I expect? Is it that bad a hotel? (NB I'm interested in thoughts on it as a hotel, not the cardroom).

I stayed there last summer and it was fine. Never stayed at Borgata, so I can't factor in the letdown effect. I also ran great when I played, so maybe that accounts for my view.

The Taj hotel rooms are a dump. Trop was just fine, even in the old rooms.

I think the Taj rooms are better then the Trop but they're all better then Super 8.

What rate did you get and how?

I'm going tomorrow night. The reservation w/ Poker rate is $49. After taxes and all that, it's about $62. If you are going just to play poker and sleep, the rooms are fine. But if it's a romantic getaway, you should be shelling out cash for the new rooms anyway. The biggest problem with the room is the fact that the lights outside are so bright. With the blinds closed, it's not so bad but light still gets in.
But the rooms are not trashy or bad smelling if that's what you mean.

It's a perfectly serviceable hotel. I've stayed in the old tower several times and never had a problem. It's not glamourous but is functional for a good night's sleep.

I've stayed there probably 10 times in the last 5 years- never had a problem with the rooms. It's not glamourous but is functional for a good night's sleep, and not expensive if you get the poker rate $80 to 100 on Fri and Sat nights. Do not worry, you'll be pleased.

like you said its no Borgata. So if you expect Borgata you will be disappointed. Everytime I've stayed there its been about what I expected. I've never been to AC to enjoy the hotel room. Although I will admit the beds at Borgata are money.

"What rate did you get and how? "

No special rate as such, I just checked availability on their website and it offered me a room for 72 bucks including taxes. They seem to have some kind of special offer going at the moment.

Its pretty bad.

No game selection, crappy rooms, nasty crack whore waitresses who will bring you beer in a 6 oz plastic cup, dirty rooms, bad dealers, and a parking garage that may or may not collapse on you. So yeah I would stick to Borgata.

I stayed there, but didn't play there.

I thought the room was fine, save for the fact that that the bathroom was set up such that one the shower curtain was pulled you blocked the only source of light in the room and thus showered in dim lighting.

Agreed. Trop isn't Borgata, but it ain't bad. If Borg is a 9, old rooms are a 6, new 7 (just for "newness", really). Not any great features, but perfectly fine.

Biggest knock on the new tower is distance from the casino. You have to walk entirely through the Quarter to get to the tower elevators. Luckily, the poker room is one of the closer casino points to the Quarter.

Re: Tropicana AC a dump?

I've stayed in the old wing at the Trop and the rooms are in serious need of renovation. However, the Quarter is very nice and there are lots of nice bars and restaurants. Incidentally, Aztar's other property, the Trop in Las Vegas is a serious dump. Hope you have a good time.

Re: Tropicana AC a dump?

Make sure to get a room in the West Tower. It's the one put up most recently before the Havana Tower, and is still in OK shape - I've always enjoyed staying there. The North tower rooms are horrible and should be avoided.

The poker room is fine, but the clients include a contingency of bums that shouldn't be allowed in. I've had to leave games because of unbearable sweat & urin odors on several occasions.

Best,

McMelchior (Johan)

Thanks for the advice. Do I need to phone ahead to make sure I get a West Tower room do you think?

Some other questions for while I'm there - which of the new poker rooms should I check out? I don't really care too much about game selection - nice chairs, chips, waitresses and drinks service are what I'm after (other than the Borgata). Proximity to the Trop would be a bonus.

And a key follow-up question - does the Caesar's poker room serve bottled beer?

The Showboat/House of Blues new room is very nice. Great chairs and ok wait service.

Ceasars room is ok and I found the staff to be friendly. They are running a WSOP event soemtime during the 1st quarter so they have been working on improving the quality of their dealers. Sorry can't remember about the beer.

Ballys has a nice room but the dealers don't understand poker or english.
