JJ Shorthanded

This is my second hand at the table, so I have no reads, which makes this hand very difficult.

I'm dealt JJ in the SB. Folds to button who raises. I reraise. BB calls. Button caps. I call. BB calls.

The flop is 877 with two hearts.

What's my best line here on the flop?

I'm checking and raising when the button bets.

okay...

Button 3-bets, I call to hit a boat. If I miss my boat on the turn and still have the overpair, should I call down?

If you don't then you shouldn't call the 3-bet. If you think you're behind you're drawing to 2 outs.

When I get 3-betted, aren't you thinking QQ, KK, AA? BB was in the hand to the turn also. I'm getting 24 to 1, and I'm getting real close to that, so I call. Should I ever call down here?

I would bet out on the flop. If you wait for the Button to bet this, SB will probably come along considering the size of the pot. There is no way to protect your hand here.

I'd lead out on the flop, and proceed from there depending on the action.

EDIT: I completely misread the action and agree with the line that you took. Check-raise to try and protect, and call down from there.

Wait, you never said what the action on the flop actually was; I read it as the turn action. What happened on the flop along with the button 3-bet? Who's in the hand?

It was just like moose proposed, I check-raised the button, button 3-bet. BB came along.

I'm the SB.

Re: JJ Shorthanded

All right, so we's got this clear, 12SB preflop and 7 when the button 3-bets you. BB will call that, so 20-1 to hit your boat, cool.

Assuming the turn and river are bricks (and BB's on a draw) we're looking at paying 2BB for what will end up being a 15.5BB pot. Our actual odds are better than this of course since we might hit a J (or best of all hit the J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] and BB makes a flush). Think Button might be overplaying TT or dumb crap enough to make this worth it? I do. Yeah I guess we can call this down, though I'd seriously consider dumping if an A pops on the turn.

Watch BB have 77.

So overpairs in big pots demand calling down, even when you are likely behind?

Depends on who you're playing against, but I call down in these spots against an unknown. Particularly in 6max games where there are so many supper aggro monkeys that could play the hand like this with a worse hand .
