help me if you know about cars - a tyre/wheel question

I looked on google and I'm sure this is out there but I'm really astonishingly bad at finding it.

Here's the question: I have a tyre with no wheel inside. I have a wheel that is designed to fit inside the tyre. Is it possible for me to put the wheel in by hand? If so, is it safe to use?

Thanks for the help of anyone who knows this.

did you try using "tire" instead of "tyre" in your search?

No because I'm British. Thanks, I'll try that.

If its a car tire you're better off just letting a shop do it. It can be done relatively easily with a motorcycle or bike tire but I think a car tire would be pretty tough.

You'll need to have the tire balanced anyways so you might as well just take it to a garage and let them do the whole procedure.

No, but almost any tyre fitter will put it on for you for the price of a drink.

Thanks for your response. What does having it balanced mean? It's a spare tyre, I'm not going to be putting it on my car.

It can be done, but it would be pretty tyring work.

Having it balanced means they put it on a machine that tells them if the tire is unbalanced (heavier on one side etc) and they put weights on it to make it balanced. This stuff makes the car drive smoothly, without vibrations, pulling to one side, wearing out the tire unevenly and so forth. This is worthwhile work even on a spare, since you will eventually use the spare. Like the other guy said, it's not a very expensive procedure, well worth the few bucks it costs.
