Poker Actually Works on Resume

This is probably a niche thing, but the wall street trading desk I interviewed on really liked the fact that I played poker at the level I do. The ability to multitask a number of things, make quick decisions and commit capital to them, and then analyze those decisions at the end of the day to improve. It's exactly the same skill set needed for flow trading, and they are similair jobs in a lot of ways.

I would imagine some of the stigma has cleared in the last 5 years - I still remember a special on players that followed Varkoni a year after he won and he was trying to get a job but was sorta having a bit of a hard time with the whole getting past the "gambler" label - (and that's bad for accountants)

Now it'd be like telling people you were trying to be an artist or athlete and didn't succeed - as opposed to looking like a degererate gambler.

Good job. (I hope)

And now you have an excuse for tilting away their $213 million portfolio!

I work as an analyst for a retirement company and I mentioned poker in the interview. I sold it as understanding advanced mathematics, psychology, and analyzing trends and also mentioned playing four tables at a time. I'm sure I would've gotten the job anyway based on prior experience, but it certainly didn't hurt, they were very intrigued.

King Yao's bio in his book says when he was working trading futures (or something like that) that they played poker at work for training. (not exactly sure of these details, i don't have the book with me.)
