XP LAN connection

I just swapped an old windows 98 computer on my network for a new XP. The new computer sees my LAN connection, but cannot get to the internet. All firewalls are off, its a brand new computer/clean.
If anyone has any advice on what to look at I would appreciate it.

Is there any restriction on MAC addresses that are allowed to connect?

This might be if you connect directly to your cable or DSL modem and your service provider is expecting a certain network card to connect.

It might also be the case if you are using a router with MAC address control activated.

I think I understand. I am using the same router with a cloned MAC adress. This setup worked before the new computer. Basically I think there is something in XP I am missing.

Same cable, same router, with same settings, new computer running XP and no internet connection.

Thanks for the help

OK, so the router is cool going out, but what about the new XP machine talking to the router?

Do you have any kind of MAC address control turned on for the router? For instance, you may have done this with a wireless router to prevent unknown devices from jumping on your network.

You might also want to look at the Hardware settings under Start > Control Panel > System and make sure your network card is installed correctly and has current drivers.

I can ping the web by name or IP(in DOS window), just no IE6 use, any suggestions?

Is there a proxy setting on your IE? From IE go to Tools > Internet Options. In the new window, click the Connections tab and then the LAN settings at the bottom. Try unchecking everything and seeing if this fixes it.

Re: XP LAN connection

I appreciate all your help, and I looked at my settings.

I have IE working online, no dial up, with nothing checked in LAN.

I connected for about 3 seconds when refreshing earlier if that makes any difference.

I ran a winsock repair and am getting ready to call dell for whatever that may be worth.

Try bypassing the router. Can you get an IP address and connect to the Internet that way?

Re: XP LAN connection

I can't connect direct without calling the cable company, I use the DHCP service from the router to asign the IP address to the computer and have cloned the registered computers MAC adress onto the router (which all works, or did on an old 98 machine)

I can see the non-working computer from the working computer, but not vice versa, still pings a web site and the router. Email connects and authorizes, then starts to download messages and times out.

I appreciate your feedback and help, its frustrating the hell out of me
