Hypothetical WSOP Satellite Question

Let's pretend that you are playing in a Stars 650 WSOP satellite. There are 9 players left. 1-8 get seats + 1K, 9th gets 650. Blinds are 600-1,200. All the players at the table are somewahat reasonable. The stack sizes and positions are as follows:

SB (28,000)
BB (Hero) (20,000)
UTG (20,000)
UTG1 (50,000)
UTG2 (40,000)
MP1 (12,000)
MP2 (30,000)
CO (35,000)
BUT (30,000)

Action: It is folded to MP1 who goes all-in for 12,000, folded to Hero who has KK. Hero?

If you answer fold, what would be the maximum stack size of MP1 that you would call against? If you answer call, would your answer change if you had 25,000 to begin with instead of 20,000?

On sight w/ out figuring out the math of the thing, I call. It feels right, but I'm not sure that it is.

I never really play satellites, but I'd have to say this is a call. It gives you the best chance to bust this guy, without committing your entire stack, if somebody were to push over the top, I'd muck, hoping that theres no way he'd reraise with anything but AA and thus knock out the villain.

Note that you are the BB and last to act

This one hurts deep inside. I think I call, knowing that the short stack, being reasonable, knows there are VERY few hands that someone is going to mix it up with him on. It's tempting to just wait it out, but once he steals this pot, he's not that far behind you and no one else is hurting that you can hope gets pushed out. I think if I have 25K I may fold, b/c UTG has only 20 and is getting ready to hit the blinds. 30K I would certainly fold.

I call and try to bust the villian myself.

Disclaimer: I am the kind of satellite player that likes to be very proactive in ending them, keep this in mind as my plays tend to be on the over aggressive side of things.

I need to know how the short stack became a shorty, and how long they're been doing so. Putting him on a range is the key aspect of this exercise.

Call it. You are most likely a big favorite to end the tournament right there. If you do lose, you aren't totally crippled since you have 6BB left after the blinds.

In theory, when the short stack goes all in, shouldn't everyone call and check it down? Altruistic maybe, but all else being equal 8 out of 9 times the guy is busted, and 1 in 9 he is then the chip leader, but you are all still playing.

It would also be interesting to make a deal. If everyone put up 1k, you all still go, sans the spending money, and he gets a serious cash prize, and is almost there as well.
