AA vs big stack limp

This hand is from last night's Super Tuesday. I would like to know how I should have played this hand. I had just been moved to this table so I don't have a read on this one. This had been my 6th hand.

The limp from the big stack smelled to me like a middle pair. My thought though is that I want her around and that she can possibly double me up. I think the only place I played incorrectly was on the turn, where I should have pushed all in since I was going to that on the river anyhow. Although I never thought that player was on a draw.

I appreciate any comments or insight.

I would have bet more pre-flop. Your logic on keeping middle pairs around confuses me. The only way a middle pair is going to double you up is if no overcards fall, and they are absolutely convinced you are on AK.

Your bet sizes are good. His calls are atrocious.

I would have done 2 things differently:
1. raise preflop more than 2.25 BB, make it at least 3x if not 4
2. Bet stronger on the flop (or push) or at least push on the turn

Sam, do you really think the bet size on the turn is good? The pot is a little over 3,000 after hero's bet, so villain, looking at a call of 725, is getting better than 4:1 actual pot odds to hit an OESD, with hero having another 820 left for purposes of calculating the implied odds. Seems like a correct call on the villain's part; I think pushing on 4th is better.

Of course, this analysis is with 20/20 hindsight, knowing that the villain is on an OESD. Looking at that board, and the betting pattern, I don't think I ever would have put villain on an 89, so the turn bet of 725 looks like a good bet size to induce villain to bleed more chips to the set of A's. Why doesn't this game ever have concrete answers.....?

Re: AA vs big stack limp

Your turn bet of 725 into a 2675 pot is too small.

When the ace hits, it might feel like you have the nuts, but you still have to be sure to price him out of any draws he's on or has found. You're offering him almost 4-1 (+).

His turn call is bad, but it's not atrocious. If you had pushed on the turn, he's definitely priced out, and you pick up what's in the pot, which is what should have been the goal no matter what in this spot, spike or no spike.

Yes, it sounds like 20/20 hindsight, and yes, it sounds results-oriented, but that doesn't make it incorrect.

So, do you think he calls a push (1575) on the turn?

Note the time of my post. We said almost the exact same thing at the same time.

Quite right. My math skills deserted me, and I thought this was 1/2 pot, not 1/4.

On the turn I like a value bet, and would also have lost all my chips to the push.

Excuse my naivity. Why isn't this A-A a push from the get go?

Because the hand has more value than what is in the pot preflop, and a push will not be called enough for it to realize its value.

These little mini raises are not good - your raise should have been at least 500. When you have two Aces you need to let him know you have a hand. Being cute in NL will get you broke. It's the old saying "better to win a small pot than lose a big one" and nothing could be more true.
