Short hand starting hand values?
 

Let me preface this by saying that I play mostly at lower limits. Lately, I have been trying my hand at PL Omaha SnGs, and I find that I am lost preflop as far as what I should be raising and what I should be calling raises with when the table gets shorthanded. The last 3 I have played I had the chip lead when it became 4 handed and came in third all 3. This seems to be a fairly consistent theme in my PL Omaha SnGs. I just don't know how to adjust starting hand values in these situations.

I have pretty good success in NL Holdem SnGs, and I feel a lot of that is that I adjust well throughout the format.

At Omaha, I don't know what sort of hands you are looking to raise short handed. Do you start raising hands with a dangler (like KQJ5 with the 5 offsuit from everything else)? Would you call raises with these types of hands? How about heads up? What is a hand with about the average hand strength (similar to Q7o in holdem)? I am tired of getting blinded to death. Thanks for your advice.

Bit like HE when its' short - look for big card value.

Dont worry about looking for or requiring the nice coordinated hands so much, though they're still good; your 3 big cards with a dangler is the kind of thing to take swings at the blinds with. When you play out pots, you'll find a lot of them are raggedy pair and 2 pair winners, so better to be holding bigger ranks.


HU at the end of a tourney, though, there aren't too many hands I wouldnt play.

High cards and big pairs go up in value when shorthanded.
You should also play your big drawing hands aggressive since you win when you hit or your opponents fold. Even if you only have an overpair to the flop you should be betting so that opponents with drawing hands don't get the right odds.
A hand like JJ56 is a raising hand imho when headsup or 3 handed.
